PSA: Double check your credit card statements, ladies!

DH got a call from Capital One yesterday to verify his transaction on a Turkish airline website trying to purchase $1,700+ in tickets.  Um, what?!  He told them he absolutely did NOT make that purchase.  So, they closed his account, told him to destroy that card, are doing an investigation and are sending him a new card with a different account number.

His credit card is still on his person (he never lost it), so we're not sure how these knuckleheads got the number. Best we can figure is they hacked some website.  So, just be careful and watch your balances/double check your statements!

  • This happened to our capital one card a few years ago.  What a pain.

  • I knew being maxed out would come in handy some day! They're not getting any money out of me. LOL!

For real though, this happened to me once previously and it sucks. Glad the cc company is taking care of it without any hassle and thank goodness they caught it.

  • This happened to us too. Thankfully, they only used the card for about $500 in purchases. It was our Discover card, and they always call to verify large purchases, so we were able to get it taken care of ASAP.

We don't know how they got our number either. We shred statements, etc. The person ordered a bunch of shoes from piperlime.com, paid for ancestry.com, and bought a bunch of stuff from another website.

Who steals a card # then pays for ancestry.com??

  • ancestry.com subscriptions aren't the cheapest things in the world - I have one.  But seems random to use a stolen CC# for that.

Hmm, maybe they're trying to see if their ancestors were dirtbags, too?

  • Wow! Glad they called. I have been hearing of this happening a lot lately, scary!
  • One of my friends just posted on FB how he had internet thieves steal from his BoA account... I think they were operating under the pretense of providing educational grants... I'm not too sure of the details.

My dad pays for the identity lock (or whatever it's called), because of the hassle he had a few years ago when someone else's credit info was mixed up with his in the credit reports. Well low & behold, he's just discovered that someone else has been mistaken for him AGAIN despite the identity lock service! (He does have a pretty common name though).

There are plenty of con artists, and they make for great actors. Trust me, DH & I have encountered plenty in the jewelry/ high end retail biz.

  • glad they called you. thanks for the psa.

they must have a lot of problems with ancestry.  i have an account that I keep trying to renew online and amex keeps calling about it and putting it on hold. i kept telling them it's ok but it keeps happening.

Probably the same guy who stole my husband's wallet, then used Matt's grocery store loyalty program card to pump gas at a cheaper price...and then did a drive off. Yeah, they caught him in about 10 minutes. Thank God for stupid criminals.

  • You know, it's interesting that you say Turkish airlines. My BIL had some weird charges on his citi credit card that were from Turkey.  This was just about 4-6 months ago, and both his and SIL's cards were on their person as well.

Scary, but it's good that Capital One called!
