I have a little Canon camera and I put it on portrait, and it just doesn't fuzzy up the background. The colors aren't so crisp.
I really don't want to spend the money or the purse space on a SLDRLDLDLD or whatever. But I am SO envious of people's pics of their kids that just look perfect.
The shots take a bit long to register, so the cute smile Olivia gives me is gone by the time the camera shoots.
any advice?
Re: is it possible to get really nice shots from my P&S?
what kind is it?
mine is a cannon powershot s80 and I can put it on portrait and adjust settings and get really good pics... I've never taken a class... I just play around with it depending on where we are.... you can change one part for environment (sunny outside, cloudy outside, flourescent lights, etc)... then there's the flash settings (I get better shots using the flash all the time when on portrait or custom... on auto, I leave it on auto.)...some other settings that I'm not sure what it means... I just play around until I get really crisp shots.
I really should take a class. the camera is 3 1/2 y/o, I should look up the manual for more info.
Depends on how good your camera is, you'll never get pics like you would with a SLR, but you could get better, if you know how to adjust your settings. This "course" may help a little...

you can change the weeks all the way to "twelve" and it will help you learn your camera. The shutter lag though, probably something you'll have to deal with, or get a better P&S, some have better shutter speed than others.I just bought the cannon Powershot SX110. it is a 9 megapixel camera. it takes really nice pics!!
It was my xmas present this last year. I really like the quality of pic.
Do you have the camera at the highest resolution to take the crisper pics? I have mine all the way up to super fine shots. it works great.
I think the only really good pics are the ones taken outside.
Thanks, Halo! I'll definitely turn off the red eye thing now. I always edit my photos anyway.
We have a cheapy P&S, it's the Sony CyberShot.
One thing that helps me get the good smile (and I only discovered this a few days ago) is you can change the setting from One pic to BURST when it takes continuous shots while the button is being held down. I LOVE THAT>
I think it is a Canon PowerShot SD 790. I don't have the red-eye on. I like the burst photos too- just can't remember how to turn it on.
I will break out the manual. I took a photo class in college and loved being able to manipulate the f-stop etc. But i just hate how bulky the nice cameras are.
thanks ladies!
It's hard to do the "fuzzy out the background" pics with a PNS bc they are programmed to focus on everything- to keep everything in focus, I mean.
To get the fuzzy shot, you have to be closer to the object than the object is to whatever is behind it.
I'm not sure you can do anything about shutter lags though
I just sucked it up and bought my own Nikon d40 for MotherVersary.
