Any vegetarians craving meat??

This is the worst. I dont eat any meat, eggs, or dairy and for the last 2 weeks I have been intensly craving a Wedny's cheeseburger!!! I am not a veggie for religious reason, more ethical reasons and what they put into meat now a days.

I am so conflicted. Should I jsut eat it? Is the baby trying to tell me it needs something? Or should I stick to my guns?

Anyone else going through the same thing? What have/are you doing about it?

  • If you've been a vegetarian for some time now, I wouldn't.  Introducing it into your system suddenly might make you sick.  I'm not talking from experience, but this is what I have heard.

I'm the opposite right now.  I can't stand the thought of meat!

if you dont eat eggs or dairy I would be a little concerned. You need ALOT of protein and calcium when you are pregnant.

Do you not eat yogurt or cottage cheese or anything?

Have you talked to your OB/Midwife about your diet and the guidelines you need?

Since I have become PG I have started eating dairy again. I drink a big glass of milk a day, and eat yogurt. They said it was fine that I was a veggie, as long as I am getting enough protein in my diet (which I do).

Good that's great. that was the only concern. I dont think you necessarily HAVE to eat meat but I think dairy will be huge for you. Maybe eggs? but if not I think you'll be fine.

What are you eating for your protein?

  • I am a vegetarian, although not as strict as you are.  I just decided to eat meat.  I had my first hamburger in several years about a week ago.  My feeling is that if I am craving meat (and tons of cheese too) then my body must want some of the nutrients in it so I won't deprive myself of that.

  • By the way, I didn't get sick at all.

  • Chances are you are probably craving the protein in the meat rather than the actual meat itself.  I don't know a lot about being a veg. but I've heard it can be heard to get enough protein without the eggs/dairy/meat ... so maybe try upping your protein sources, and if that doesn't work ... hey, at least it will taste good! :)
  • I'm going through the same thing.  Although I eat seafood.. little to no meat.  I have slowly been working a bit of dairy in as well.  I have been craving a good steak, so I'm having one about once a week.

A well balanced Veg diet is perfectly ok during pregnancy

Yes, I am, and I'm also veg for ethical reasons. I'm craving all the nastiest, greasiest meats possible - especially hot dogs and sausages.

I went and bought some fake sausages... I usually don't do fake meats, but I had some last night and it really hit the spot! I would give that a try before you go for the real thing. GL

Maybe your body needs some extra zinc, iron and protein. If you are worried about getting sick, you could try a lean cut of beef, like a nice 3oz sirloin steak.

I've been mostly a vegetarian for 15 years. I eat some seafood and I eat dairy and eggs. I haven't had any cravings for meat at all. For the most part, meat smells and looks disgusting to me (although for some reason pepperoni pizza smells wonderful). You can have a perfectly normal and healthy pregnancy and not eat meat. Increasing your protein intake might decrease your meat craving. But if that doesn't help, do whatever you feel comfortable with.

  • During my first pregnancy I was craving meat so I mentioned it to my midwife.  She said that because it had been over 20 years since I had eaten meat, and because I was already suffering from some pregnancy-related digestion issues, she would not recommend it.

She did suggest these awesome bars to make sure I was eating enough protein.  They are delicious!  (Despite the name, they are not necessarily for "dieting," which one obviously would not be doing while pregnant.)  It's like a candy bar without all the junk.  They can be sort of expensive, but I've found that Trader Joe's sells them by the box for the most reasonable price.  My favorite is the Chunky Peanut Butter.  I highly recommend them for anyone, not only vegetarians.

  • I agree with pp's that say you probably are just craving more protein.  I was a vegetarian for 5 years and SLOWLY reincorporated meat into my diet by first adding fish, then poultry, and then red meat.  I still had major stomach and intestinal cramps the first few times that I ate more than a few bites of red meat...so be careful!

  • I am not experiencing this yet and I hope I don't.  It is one of the things that worries me most, because I think even if I caved and ate meat I'd feel really ill.  Let me know what you decide to do.
  • Yeah, mostly I am scared of how my body will react if I do give in and eat the burger.

Right now I get all my protein from soy products, tofu, chunky organic peanut butter, beans, and nuts. Oh and I started drinking 2% milk everyday which is also high in protein.

  • I'm a partial vegetarian (I eat some seafood), and I have had some serious cravings for burgers and bbq, but I haven't eaten it, b/c I know I will get VERY sick afterwards, and I do not think it will be worth the trade off. I don't think the babies would get anything from it b/c I would probably throw it up before there was a chance to get any nutrients. I have been eating a lot of yogurt, cheese, eggs, nuts and other protein sources to make up for not eating meat. I eat some seafood as well.

Good luck! I hope you enjoy it if you do have one, and if you don't, maybe a veggie burger would hold you?! Sometimes I even go and get a fast food cheeseburger without the burger- I know it sounds weird, but it does satisfy my cravings.

  • I gave in and had the same craving for wendy's. I will say one thing. If you do give in and want a hamburger, steer clear of wendy's or any fastfood. If you are going to splurge on a burger make it a good one. I was so disgusted with the grease from the burger that I choose to satisfy my meat craving. I don't know why I did it even. I felt so ill even as I ate it, but it made me realize why I was a vegetarian again. I was also reminded of it for the next two days.

  • I was a veg until about 2 weeks ago...i was having an intense craving for a burger and i was sooo ill, and it was all i could imagine eating in the entire world.  so i gave in and ate the burger and i immediately felt better, full, and fully satisfied.  since then i have been eating meat because it's almost the only thing i crave and when i'm feeling bad and hungry, i figure i might as well eat what sounds good.  also, i got an extreme aversion to beans of all sorts, which made up a great portion of my diet previously.  i can't even think about eating beans now without getting sick, so i'm at least happy that i'm gettting my protein from the meat.  I am still very selective about what kind of meat i eat, ie: organic, free-range, hormone-free.
  • i was veggie for years until about 6 mos ago when i gave into temptation, and then i fell off the wagon hard!  but i didn't get at all sick when i started eating it again, so i wouldn't think that would be a big problem.

that said, and i'm sure you already know this, but you can have a perfectly healthy vegetarian pregnancy -- women across the globe have been doing so for ages.  as long as you eat a balanced veggie diet, you will be fine.

a veggie friend bought me a great cookbook back when i started TTC (i was still veggie back then) called the vegetarian mother's cookbook.  it has lots of veg recipies that are supposed to be good for nausea and for cravings.  also has recipes for family meals/feeding kids.

  • I am a vegetarian too, but I have not gotten any meat cravings. Just cheese.  I really wouldn't suggest getting a Wendy's cheeseburger.  I am doubtful that greasy thing would do anything nutritionally for you.  I am betting you are doing much better with the beans, nuts and soy.  Have you tried Luna bars?  They are like a big granola bar, but they have quite a bit of protein and other vitamins a lot of vegetarians are lacking normally.

I just know if I gave into that craving after not eating  meat for so long I would feel gross, physically and emotionally!  I keep myself from eating meat by just thinking of what it is. As soon as I think of what it is (or was..) I do not want it anymore.

  • Let me start off by saying that i am not a vegetarian by any means...

Many people have a very healthy pregnancy on a vegetarian or vegan diet.  But it is thought that some cravings actually come about because the item is something that your body is lacking and needs.  If you are craving meat - maybe you need more iron... and the baby is trying to tell you.

Good luck!  I would just eat the meat... but don't eat that greasy Wendy's crap... make something at home yourself and only a little bit to satisfy your craving and thats it...

  • After being a vegetarian for years, I began eating meat about a month ago because I was craving it so badly. Funny that you wanted Wendy's, that is what sucked me in too. For me it was the spicy chicken sandwich. At this point, if my baby is telling me that it wants a spicy chicken sandwich, then it is silly to deprive him/her for fear of what it will do to me. It didn't make me sick, and I have been able to eat some other kinds of meat since then, which I honestly believe is what my body needed. You can always go back after your pregnancy, but we have these cravings for a reason... listen to them!
