Anyone not doing a rocking chair or glider?

Just wanted to know if anyone was planning on not having one these types of chairs in the nursery. Thanks!  :)

Re: Anyone not doing a rocking chair or glider?

  • we got an oversized, super comfy chair with ottoman. i don't like gliders -eww.

  • if you are talking about the wood gliders - Im not either....i opted for a gliding upholstered chair and ottoman that i scored off craigslist....i think those wood chairs are prehistoric torture devices
  • We are actually getting a La-z-boy rocker/recliner.  They have never been my favorite chairs (comfortable? Yes.  Pretty?  No.) But my husband has been dying for one and the "pretty" chairs we've seen in the boutique type stores are WAY over priced.  So he finally convinced me that the money we will spend on a la-z-boy will be worth it in the end because after it's done in the nursery he can move it to the den.  And I think we found one that is both super comfortable and doesn't look like your typical grandpa-style recliner.

This for us too...except the recliner's for me.  I second that they have cute ones too!

  • We did an upholstered glider chair. Couldn't live without now. And, don't under estimate how much the rocking part is important - when baby is fussy (and it even helps to calm you) to rock.

Oh good!  I was worried I might be the only one with a lazboy in the nursery!!  lol.  and don't get me wrong, I will probably be sitting in it once it's moved too.  I've also heard it could come in handy during the last 4-6 weeks of pregnancy when you can pretty much give up on sleeping in the bed!!

  • We have a glider just because we got one with our nursery furniture for DS, and that's the furniture that this baby will use.  But honestly, I hardly ever used it with DS.
  • I could not live without a glider...I am not going to keep it in the nursery all the time. ?I am going to keep ours mostly in the family room. ?I want to make sure that the baby and I are always around DH and DD. ?I do not want to be all alone in the nursery with the baby all the time. ?

    SOOOOOOOOOOOOO true!

  • We're not getting a rocking chair or a glider. Our nursery is also our guest room (LO will be in with us when we have visitors), and since both our families live far away, we need to keep it a guest room too. Which means there just isn't space for a rocker. Plus, they're expensive. I'm really hoping we can make do with our living room sofa/arm chair.
  • we didn't do one, and although I did miss being able to cuddle and rock with my baby, she is the easiest thing to put to bed.  I take her upstairs, put her in her crib and she goes to sleep.  I never had to spend hours rocking her to get her to go to sleep.  My mom actually tried swaying with her when she was putting her to sleep, and she is like, UMMM no, just put me down.  So there are advantages to not doing the chair in the nursery!  But I may do it soon, so I can read her stories in her room instead of downstairs.
  • this post does make me a little curious about how babies do that don't have any sort of rocker/glider in the house.  when my baby was real little he preferred to be 'walked'.  ....oh, the miles i put in those first 6 months!

we have a modern Eames rocker and i L-O-V-E it!  my bio is super duper ancient, but i think there is a picture of it.  unfortunately they're about $400 new but this one we 'found' (long story).  i bet gliders would be pretty comfy in the middle of the night w/a newborn, but dang, they look so outdated.  sorry, just my opinion!

oh, another plus to 'good looking' rockers/recliners is you can put them in other rooms later.  when we have a second baby i want my kids to share a room.  we might not have room for the rocker in the nursery any more but it'll look good in the living room at least.

  • Like someone else said, the nursery is still going to be a guestroom.  So we have a futon in there, but no room for a rocker.  However, we have two la-z-boys downstairs (not far since our house is small), so we'll use those if needed.
