Nipple shield question for BF Moms

I have been using the nipple shield per the recommendation of my lactation consultant since my LO was born.  I am now trying to wean her off the shield and I am having no luck!!

Any recommendations?  I don't want the shield to decrease my supply..the LC says that this won't happen, but I have heard it can happen.

Re: Nipple shield question for BF Moms

  • I used one for a week or so when I had DS.  I weaned him off of it by removing it part of the way through each feeding and trying to get him to latch without it.  It didn't take long for him to learn to nurse on his own.

  • Can you try using it until you let down and then putting the baby on the breast?
  • My boy wouldn't wean until a few weeks ago (maybe at 9 weeks).  I also think he found it easier to latch when I was full vs. half way through a feeding.

Just take it slow and don't get frustrated!

Also - my supply is great.  I think it would be more of a supply problem if the baby isn't sucking properly w/o the shield...

     Good luck!  cg

  • I am having the same problem. I try to take the shield off and she just "plays" with my nipple instead of latching. I am trying not to get frustrated but she gets frustrated when she is not getting any milk so it frustrates me! I will keep trying though becuase I do not want to be tied down to a shield should I forget it when we leave the house.

  • It took me from 5 weeks until 4 months to wean my dd.  We never had a supply problem and her weight gain was fine with the shield.

Don't get frustrated while trying to wean your lo from it and don't let lo get frustrated, if they won't nurse without it, put it back on.  I just kept presenting my bare breast to dd and finally one day she decided to suck and realized she could get milk that way and we never had to use it again.

  • DS weaned off the shield at 1 month...That was the most frustrating month too.  I hated the shield.  I had to do what pp mentioned, let him use it until letdown, then take it off.  It also helped for him to eat for a few minutes to satisfy him, then try when he wasn't so hungry.  I also had to kind of squish my breast to give him something to latch to.  Sounds strange when I put it into words...It only took a couple of days for him though.  Be consistent with it. Try at every feeding.  If LO or you get frustrated, then put the shield back on.  Good luck.

  • We weaned at 3 months.  She just wasn't ready until then.  Never affected supply.  Just be patient and keep trying once a week or so.

  • I have just started weaning from the nipple shield in the past few days.  I have been working with an LC.  I work on weaning during the times of day when I am most alert so I avoid getting frustrated.  Usually after about 5 minutes with the shield, I try without it and it always works (at least for about 5-10 minutes) and sometimes I still go back to the shield during a feeding.  I too was frustrated with using the shield and I am glad that I have an LC to help me with this issue.  If you haven't met with an LC, you might want to because she really helped me with this!  Good luck!

Also, it has not affected my milk supply at all!  Still going strong!
