1st Trimester

Nightmares during the 1st Trimester

I'm nearing the end of my first trimester (11 weeks). I've been trying to research nightmares while pregnant but none of my nightmares are about me being a mother or children or anything like that. They seem completely random except I'm the victim who gets assaulted, beaten, or worse- it's like watching a horror movie that it extremely gorey- think Jeepers Creepers meets Nightmare on Elm Street with a little Video game violence thrown in.

I'm never thinking about being pregnant or show I'm pregnant. There are never children around. Just people I know or hang out with-not always hubby either which is normal for me.

Is it my blood sugar? I'm just trying to figure out where this is coming from. I mean we did get the bed much more comfy for me- cut down a King size to a Queen microfoam mattress pad and Firm King size pillow- but this has been going on since I found I was pregnant which was May 1st.

Any ideas? I plan on talking with my doctor about it though I wont' see them til June 26th so. Just wanted other thoughts and opinions with other Moms or Moms to be. Thanks for you assistance.

Re: Nightmares during the 1st Trimester

  • Do you watch anything racey before bed? Or eat? That could be causing it.. I avoid crazy shows and food near bedtime

  • I had terrible nightmares with my first and am having terrible nightmares this time as well. Mine aren't related to pregnancy or parenting at all, but they usually have something to do with me being attacked or chased. I'm just starting to think of them as a normal first trimester symptom now that I've had them with both.

So, no reasons why, but at least you know you're not alone.

  • I've also been having horror movie-esque nightmares lately. I'm never a mother or pregnant in my dreams. I know that pregnancy can cause more vivid dreams, but I don't know why. I'm psychologically and physically stressed right now, so I assume that is why I have stressful dreams.

  • I'm about 50/50 on the dreams involving pg/baby.  I don't think there is anything wrong with having strange dreams that don't involve your current state.

  • I've been having weird dreams like that too.  The other night I had a dream that my neighbor was trying to get in my house to rape me.  It was crazy and now I get the chills when I see him.  He's always been very nice to us, and I'm trying to tell myself it was all a dream, but it's hard when the dream seemed so real.  I have to eat before bed or I wake up sick in the middle of the night because I'm so hungry.  I try to eat an hour before though.  Not sure if it's related to that or not.  Just know you're not alone on scary dreams.  My other dreams is that my DD gets lost in a store.  Never DS-always DD.  It freaks me out and I'm totally paranoid about keeping them both in sight all the time.

  • I've had all sorts of crazy dreams.. some nightmarish.. not so much now (I'm 2nd trimester now) ... is normal.. hormones are exciting, aren't they? Stick out tongue

  • Crazy vivid dreams here too. I had two separate dreams last night that I was being chased.

  • I've had all sorts of dreams so far. I just chalk it up to crazy hormones.
  • I've gotten really crazy sometimes violent and very unpleasant dreams.  Then once the morning sickness got under control ... I started dreaming about sex!  Love dreaming now!
  • I don't watch racy or exciting shows...though I did watch Top Gear on BCC America though it was literally a race. That's normal. Never had weird dreams from that before.

Also we had high quality steak and worchester sauce w/ instant potatoes and mac n cheese for Dinner last night. Again things I've had but, as I recall, never had nightmares from it.

I dunno. They just seem very random b/c some I don't remember my dreams but never got the impression of anything exciting or scarey from them. Other dreams are me looking for stuff and sex then the nightmare ones. I admit that sex has never been associated with nightmare dreams ever.

Also I can't watch horror movies anymore b/c I always have nightmares from them- even just a few minutes- learned that from Jeepers Creepers. Ew.

Thanks all of you for your assistance. Nice to know I'm not the only one. :D

  • I had the most horrible dream the other night about my dog getting run over.  It was horrible and so real.  I woke up crying.  It really freaked me out.  I never thought it could be pregnancy related.

It seems like we can blame anything on pregnancy!  :)

  • I am just glad to see I am not alone. I have a variety of dreams from sex to down right violent. I just think of them as being things we fear as far as parents go. I have also learned not to eat sweets before bed, they always have me thinking of something crazy. The other night I was the star of the movie Twilight and a cross between Buffy the Vampire Slayer---when I don't even watch it.
