Success after IF

Ava's getting frustrated... Help!

She's often Robot pissed. (if you read mattlogelin's blog, that's funny....)

Anywho.... Ava has reached that stage where she's trying to do something on her own (great) and gets frustrated and throws said toy/cup/plastic egg, whatever. Meltdown insues. Rinse. Repeat.

How can I help her with this? What's the magic words? I know it's a developmental thing, but ideally, I'd like to teach her to stop and take 3 deep breaths before spazzing out. (my mom skipped that skill, lol)

thanks!

  • good luck with that.

I'm still trying to figure it out. I usually try to help her by saying "I know it's hard and you are frustrated", etc....but I think they just have to figure it out.

  • If you figure it out....let me in on the secret....I've got two that do the exact same thing.

  • Does she know the sign for help?

Make a fist with the thumb up and pound it on the other open hand.

Katen used to do this a lot and still does but then she'll remember to ask for help and it's over. Sometimes we still have to remind her to ask for help but we're getting there with less and less screaming.

Also don't hesitate to help label her emotions so she begins to understand them. ex. I see you're angry/frustrated/sad... can I help?

Also always ask them before you automatically help. That helps them realize what to ask for too.

  • your Ava's not the only one.. mine is going through the same thing Tongue Tied
  • My boys are doing the same thing and I've been trying to ask them if they need Mommy or Daddy to help before it gets too out of control.  We haven't taught them the sign for "Help" yet but I will definitely have to start working on that ASAP - thanks for the tip Mrs. Reems!
  • We've always asked "do you need help?" and she does say "help" more often than not. (well,. "het" is what she really says)  We'll try the sign too.

It's weird, cuz this is ALL me.. Davez and his sibs are tenacious lil buggers that will not quit until the job is done. And they do it quietly ;-)
