Anyone else not have much "stuff" for baby?

...i mean jumparoos, exersaucers, bumbos, swings, etc.?  we have none of that.  some of it i wouldn't mind having (bumbo in particular), but they're so dang expensive and though i love the idea of used items, frankly, craigslist creeps me out (going to some stranger's house to pick up, or vice versa?  uh-uh.).  so, our child is stuck with mostly household "toys" and best of all, DH & me!  :)  hope he likes us!

  • not sure if you have any "once upone a child" in your area, but we have one near us and it's awesome.  this past weekend i got a swing and a play/activity mat for $30 (swing was 20, baby einstein playmat was 10).  They are both in excellent condition (I actually got the exact same swing I registered for!) and I was able to wash/disenfect all of it.  It's worth looking into.  I actually went to babies r us today to return our unopened exersaucer becuase I'm going to try to get one waaay cheaper there.

  • I bought the jumperoos that attach to the door frames.  I had a travel swing and I hated the bumbo.  I never bought an exersaucer and I rarely used the floormats.  My girls were just fine playing with what they had.  All they want anyway is the camera, cell phone and remote.  I've just started getting some bigger toys to play with because they are getting bigger and need it.

  • We bought and registered for everything except for those "fun" type of things you mentioned.  Like PP's said you never know what the baby will like and they are ridiculously expensive.  I see that kind of stuff collecting dust and taking up space in my storage closet.  We borroweed everything we could - we were lucky to borrow a swing, exersaucer, 3 activity gyms, bumpo seat.  If you cannot borrow, there are some good local consignment shops out there, you can ask moms in your area.  Try local yard sales. Also try freepeats.com.
  • Our parents didn't have this stuff when we were babies and we survived.  That said, if you want something, maybe try ebay?  You can get cheaper/used but get it shipped instead of dealing with the creepy craig's list factor.
  • fwiw.. I found that I did not have enough "stuff". I got another excersaucer and jumperoo off Craigs list for less than half of a new cost and they are in PERFECT condition. Just went to a couple houses in my area. Washed the them down and viola... I think these things are great for babies. They plan, jump, laugh, stand. It's so great to see them "get it" on how to make the stuff go. not that they can't with other toys but we've loved having these things. Especially since I have three to entertain. Especially the jumperoo's. They are hilarious in them.
  • FWIW, you might want to ask friends/coworkers.  I got a lot of handmedowns and I never ask.  People just want to get rid of stuff a lot of times.  My coworker gave me a small activity gym yesterday - and I have 2 already - have 1 new and 1 handmedown.  So, I said 'yes, i'll take it', even though I don't need it really.  My neighbor gave me a bouncy seat, even though I already had one - i just said yes and took it.  yeah I have a lot of stuff (but also the room for all the crap) and these people know that DH and I both work so we don't really need handmedowns.  But DS gets bored with some stuff so it is nice to have a variety....

Also, as pp said...consignment stores.  I should have bought a used exersaucer, but with swine flu I didn't want a used one.  I should not have spent the money.  But DS loves the jumperoo more....he has one at daycare.  I should have bought one of those...

I don't think you need a lot of stuff - we have a lot of consigment shops around here - once upon a child, and others.

I don't think they really need the bumbo.  I don't really care for mine - although I know some ppl really like them.  DS can't stay in it long.

  • Thanks for all the recs, everyone!

  • I do think the bumbo was a waste. I'd rather have another jumperoo. The fact that thing and the tray were $50 kinda p!sses me off. it's a waste.
  • I wouldn't be too creeped out with craig's list.  I've gotten an activity mat and bumbo seat off there and they were in perfect condition and 1/2 the cost if I had bought them new.  It's just other moms that you are buying things from.  Both times, we met in a public place and it worked out great.  I think it's a great option for buying stuff cheap (and getting rid of stuff when I'm ready).
