Babies on the Brain

Poll: What sayeth BOTB?

Scenario:  While grocery shopping you see two pre-teen/early teen aged boys shopping with their mom in the produce section.  The boys decide to "sample" the grapes. Mom says nothing and continues shopping as if this is a regular occurance.

ETA: We're not talking 1 or 2 grapes.  The kids were taking handfuls.

  • Ehh I'm split. ?While it is an every day?occurrence?(not for me), I do think the Mom should have said something. ?

  • Obviously I'm biased.  I was shocked at these kids and their mom.

    But perhaps I'm too uptight?

  • I ate a cherry the other day at the store. I wanted to see if there were anygood before I bought them! Turns out they weren't that good!

  • I agree with Tim's!!!
  • Well, it depends on how much they were "sampling". ?Is it in quotes because he was really chowing down? ?That would be wrong. ?I think it's totally okay to have one or two. ?My Mom used to give a couple to me and ask if I liked them enough for her to buy them that day. :)

It wasn't one or two grapes.  We're talking large handfuls.

This. I don't buy grapes too often, but if I do, I'll sample one to see if they're any good. Sometimes they're mushy or sour, ya know? If it was just one or two, I don't think it's a big deal.

Now, taking a piece of candy out of the bulk candy bin is another story entirely. It's not like you don't know what a chocolate covered raisin is going to taste like on any given  day.

Yeah, that's not cool. ?Did the mom end up buying his leftovers? ?

    Same here

  • The results of this poll are very interesting to me...

I added to the original post re: the sample size.

  • I think the only time this would be partly acceptable is if the child was seriously hungry. ?As in, his family was living in poverty. ?I'm sure many would disagree with even that, though.
  • I feel bad even tasting one, but if they look questionable I will.  It's definitely theft if they taste a bunch!

  • The mom definitely should have said something. I wouldn't even let ?my children sample one or two honestly, especially because it's not like you can wash them there. Which is the same reason I don't sample - I just take the gamble. If I do sample it's only when they have the set up samples in the store.?

Agreed. I also think that I would have informed an employee if for nothing else but to teach the boys that doing something like that is unexceptable in society... or should be. At least in that large of quanities.

  • Well, with the new information, I'd like to change my vote too. If it was huge handfulls, I probably would have said something to someone who worked there.
