Does this sound like a nut allergy?

Yesterday DD#2 had some grape salad for lunch.  I removed the pecan topping and just gave her the grapes with the yummy sauce.(cream cheese and sour cream, sugar and vanilla)  Within probably 2 minutes she was really fussy and wanted down.  I cleaned her up and then noticed that she had small red welts around her mouth which lasted about 45 minutes.  She wasn't struggling to breath but she clearly was not interested in lunch.  Everything else on her plate she has eaten before except for the grape salad but she's had grapes almost daily for months.

So what do you think...allergy?

  • I'd definitely bring it up with the pedi and ask for allergy testing.  The second time the body reacts to something like this can be much worse than the first time, so I'd definitely hold off on giving her any more nuts or products that contain nuts until you talk to the pedi.

  • i would call your pedi today.  like pp said it's not usually the first time that gets a bad reaction so if she is exposed again it could be worse.  my son has a peanut/tree nut allergy and i noticed hives on his lip after nursing him.  the pedi's office said it was just sensitive skin so i kept on nursing and we eventually ended up in the er w/ a full blown reaction-not to scare you, just to let you know!

if it is an allergy, you probably want to get more extensive testing done to see if she is allergic to anything else.  i'd make sure you have benadryl on hand just in case!!!  good luck!

  • Yup for sure , My daughter had hummus and about two seconds later red red welts all over chin cheeks started spreading  up to ears.    Stopped it immediately gave benedryl and doc did allergy testing this weekend for tree nuts, nuts, sesame seeds esp she thinks that is what she reacted to..  which is in hummus sooo still waiting for results i would let your doc know.. GL
  • Sounds like an allergy to me. Kacey had this reaction to eggplant. I smeared a little on her arm and waited a few minutes and sure enough that got all red and bumpy. Definitely allergic.
  • thanks ladies! I just called the pedi. and just waiting for a call back :)
