breastfeeding and AM workouts

I plan to workout in the mornings before work (I go back once baby is 3 months old).  Anyone do this?  If so, do you nurse baby before you workout or after or do you play it by ear? I will have to leave the house by 7:30am.  I do know there will be some trial and error in trying to get a routine down.

Any tips?  What is your routine?

Re: breastfeeding and AM workouts

  • It's really hard to give advice on this because every child is different (as is every parent) and at that age, their routines change so often! I remember at about that point, my lo was sleeping until 6 am (not strait through) which was perfect because I could nurse her before work, then suddenly, she decided to sleep until 7:30. It just all depends. Do your best to have some sort of routine but also be willing to just go with it sometimes. Good luck to you!

  • Thanks.  I am thinking that any sort of routine will be touch and go for a while.

  • YES! Every time we get into the swing of things, my little stinker switches it up on me! It's a constant stress...especially bedtime. That's one of the biggest lessons I've learned...be flexible! I struggle with it. As soon as you think you have it figured out, they change. Especially early on!
  • When I was BF'ing,  I would feed DD before we went to daycare/work. When I got to work I had to pump almost immediately. ( You have to pump as much as your baby would feed. I always pumped on DD's feeding schedule when I was at work).  And before I went to the gym. Its PAINFUL to work out with full breasts, and they will often leak. So I say pump or feed just before going to the gym.
  • i agree with the pp.. whatever time you decide to workout, just make sure to BF or pump prior. easier on you to empty before jumping around AND i always had a lower supply right after workouts anyway.
  • No matter what, I would nurse before working out.  There is no way I could have personally worked out first thing with my heavy and sore rocks.  Flexibility is going to have to be the key when your little one arrives.  Good luck!
