Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Anyones eles's Dr. say peanut butter was ok??

My DD had her 12 month appointment today and the dr. said that peanut butter was ok.  I was surprised.  Anyone else hear that?

He actually said everything was ok.  Just surprised.

  • Our pedi said the same thing... after 12mo if she can chew it, she can have it. He said that a lot of the research saying to wait on certain foods is outdated and newer research shows fewer allergies occur when the child is exposed earlier rather than later.

I'm going with his advice, but will add that we don't have a history of any allergies in our family. If we did, I'd probably be a bit more cautious.

Yes, we got the okay for any food that wasn't an obvious choking hazard.
  • Yup, apparently everything is ok now!
  • Nope. Our pedi said no peanut butter until 2.

  • We did.  There are new studies out saying that holding out on giving peanut butter for allergy reasons is not doing any good and possibly causing more peanut allergies.  Pedi said we could if we wanted to, but she also said since I have sever food allergies, that it was up to what I wanted to me and my comfort level.
  • Our pedi also said PB was fine at 12 months...she said we could try anything at that point (we have no history of food allergies in our family)

  • Ours said anything was fine at 12months as well. DS has had no allergies and neither does anyone in our families.

  • We were told PB was ok at 1 year, but found out shortly after that DS is allergic to soy, so we decided to wait until 2 for peanuts.  When he goes back for his follow up allergy testing I'm going to have them test for peanuts too while we're at it.

  • Yup... as previous posters said, there are new studies out that show that giving peanut butter in the first 12 months of life reduces the risk of peanut allergies tenfold. I pretty much read the study and then gave my girls pb that day LOL.

If pedis are still advising people to wait until age 2 or later, in families with no history of peanut butter allergies, I think they are just plain behind the times where research is concerned.

  • DS's pedi also said that everything was fine to give him at his 12 month appt.  We waited until he was almost 14 months for PB just because I was scared to try it.  He was fine and now loves it.

  • Yes, our pedi said it was ok at 12 months and I was surprised because I thought it was a choking hazard.  I give it to him in very small amounts so there's no way he could choke on it.

  • Like the others, our pedi also said he can have everything....as long as he can chew it.

I have put little amounts of PB on his waffle.  Neither DH or I have any food allergies.

  • Wow, I guess my Dr. is behind the times!  She said not until age 2, and we have no family history of allergies of any kind.  Looks like we're breaking out the PB&J this week!

My pedi said the same, and she explained that it's really only a choking hazard if you give it to them without anything else-- like a glob of pb on a spoon or something. But it's safe to spread a thin coating on a cracker, piece of toast, or slice of banana.

  • I must be one of the "old school" moms.  I never asked my doc what he could and couldn't have.  My mom never did with me and my sis and we are a ok.  Well maybe not my sis, but thats a different story.   Jeremiah had PB at 10 months and oops strawberries at 4 months!

  • We got the ok for PB and eggs...although I am pretty sure she had a taste of both before that!
  • Yup. OK after 12 months.
  • Our pedi didn't say anything until I asked about it at 15 months. She said it was fine to try it, and DD loves it.

  • We also got the OK but to be careful because of the choking hazard. Our pedi actually recommended a peanut butter cookie or ritz bitz or something where the PB dry and crumbly. We haven't done it yet though...I'm paranoid. Soon though.
