Working Moms

Those in the financial biz...

I am going back to school to get my degree in accounting.  Although I was lucky to find an amazing job/salary without a degree when I took a break from school to have a baby I am too driven an individual to settle.  I love numbers and want to work in the accounting field.  I was reading the post about what everyone on this board does for a living and a big number are in the financial world.  Anyone have any advice about going through accounting classes while being a mom?  Can I work part time, be a mom, and go to school reasonably?  Thanks, just looking for some advice from people who know!

  • Congratulations!  I have not gone to school while being a mom, but have work in the accounting industry.  I would think it would be harder once you graduate if you plan to work for the B4 or some similar firm.  I would definitely think about the end game when you get closer to graduating - a smaller firm or a corporate job may help you find a better balance.

  • I took some night MBA classes when DS was about 8 months old and it was hard but not impossible.  If you could work PT, have DC in daycare FT and go to school PT I think it would be doable.  I love how flexible the accounting field can be once you graduate.  GL!
  • I have an undergraduate degree in accounting.   I would try to find a program that offers online classes.  I'm currently a teacher and have recently taken continuing education classes and have found the online classes are better suited for a family.  Even though, it's a lot of work at night (I worked after bedtime), I found that I still managed to spend ample time with my twins/DH.
