heavy cream + baby food

my 6 month old is not gaining weight, but she's above average in all her milestones. the ped says her low weight may just be her genetics (we are short and all the women in my family are petite) or she may not be getting enough calories from my breastmilk. he suggested adding heavy cream or olive oil to her solids to introduce more fat. has anyone done this? i trust my ped, so i'm sure it's safe, but just wondering if anyone else has had experience with this and if you've seen any change in baby's weight gain. thx.

Re: heavy cream + baby food

  • I have a peanut, at her 9 month appt she was 28 inches and not even 17lbs.  The thing is, she has been crawling since 5 months, pulling herself up, standing and cruising- that all takes energy.  She eats finger foods/solids and I still breastfeed.  My pedi wasn't worried about her weight because she is so active.

To fatten her up a bit, I did start using butter when cooking her egg yolk scrambles.  I have also introduced dairy, but at 9 months, so she is getting cheese, yogurt and cottage cheese.

Its too early to tell if this is making a difference. For me, 6 months is early to introduce dairy.

  • i agree. i'm very hesitant to start dairy at this point. i called my ped back for clarification. he said that since she is ahead of average developmentally and seems happy that she might just be genetically a smaller baby. he said that her amount of weight gain for months 4-6 were normal, but she's still small for her age. *sigh* oh well, hopefully she'll have a growth spurt now that i doing solids in between nursing.
