Babies on the Brain

Low birth weight question

Hi. I had my DD 2 days early and she was 6 lbs, 5oz and had two knots in her cord (was totally healthy though). Well, now i am pg with #2 and my doc said that he will have me on special fetal ultrasound monitoring (from 25 wks on, an U/S every month) due to my daughter's size. Does that sound excessive to you? 6 lbs 5 oz isn't super small, especially for a first born child. Have you ever heard of anyone else having to do something similar? Got any thoughts on the matter?

Re: Low birth weight question

  • Due to my daughter's (child #1, not the baby I am currently carrying) size.

  • 6 lbs 5 oz sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Plus, your daughter was healthy and has had no lingering effects from her "low birth weight." I guess it's good for your doctor to be cautious, but it does seem strange to me.

  • My, you have so many questions! That does not seem excessively small. Perhaps you should seek a second opinion from another doctor.
  • I don't think 6lb 5oz is small.  I guess it's better to think a head though.

  • It doesn't seem excessively small, but doctor's sometimes do that for other factors, e.g. my mom had my sister when she was over 40 and was monitored every week after 25 or so, I believe.
  • I agree that 6lbs 5oz in by no means cause for concern.  Maybe he meant to make sure this baby's cord doesn't get knots.  That could be a cause for concern.
  • I dont think it sounds small but that was my nieces weight and DH thought she was. I guess your doctor knows best or you could always get a 2nd opinion
