Have you had your son circumcised?

Tomorrow we are going to get my son circumcised, and I am really starting to get nervous.  My husband is all for it, but I never really had an opinion on it.  Now that it is looming, I am dreading the pain he is going to feel.  Has anyone had their son circumcised?  Was it really bad?  How long did it take for him to heal?

you should really do research and get all the facts.

that being said, my son is not and i am VERY happy we went that route.

  • Oh he was fine - I think, at least.

He was given baby Tylenol 30 mins prior, and then thing that upset him the most was being held down. He didn't make a sound during the procedure, but then again, he was sucking the nurse's finger (she had sugar water on it). I was there for the procedure, that was really hard being there. I was a total wreck, but DS seemed fine!

  • We did, when my son was four days old. I requested the topical anesthesia, which I think most places offer now, he was gone about 15 minutes, he came back and was calm, although, his birthday mate came back to our room for a minute and he was upset. After about three weeks it was completely healed. We did petrolatum jelly and gauze for those three weeks and we've had no problems.

    Yes

Also, if it bothers you, I would let DH stay with him during the procedure.  I stayed in the other room, and then I when it was over I nursed him and that calmed him right down.

  • Yes our son is circumcised. It was done in the hospital.  It took about a week to fully heal.  We used A&D with every change and all is well.

  • My DS was fine afterwards.   We just dripped warm water on it at every diaper changing.  Why did they wait so long to do it?  Isn't it usually done within a few days of birth?  Just curious, ours was done two days after his birth.  It was going to be done the next day, but he slept too long (awesome nurse swaddling) and I had to feed him b/c it had been over 5 hours.
  • We had it done in the hospital. They gave him baby Tylenol every 6 hours for a day afterwords although he never cried or complained.  We put Vaseline on it with ever diaper change and it healed in a week.

  • My son was at 2 days old and he slept through it. They gave him a couple drops of sugar water I guess and it made him pass out. I made DH go w/ him when the pedi took him to do it and he was watching for a couple seconds- tell him NOT TO WATCH! It only took a few days to heal- it looked scary w/ the gauze on it, but once the gauze came off it didn't look that bad at all.

This minus the birthday mate part!

  • DS's was done the morning after he was born.  They put a bell thing on it.  We didn't have to do any care.  It fell off after a week.  It looks fine.

  • Our son is and we just had to follow dimple instructions for 5 days during diaper changes. All looks good now.?
  • both of mine were done in the hospital. they healed in a week using gauze and vaseline.  no pain meds were needed afterwards - they acted completely normal.
  • Did they cry during diaper changes?  My son sometimes screams during diaper changes, I assume because he has a little rash, I'm worried he will cry every time I change his diaper, or will it be like the umbilical stump where he doesn't realize it's there?
  • Our ds was circ'd at the hospital the day after he was born.  He seemed to do just fine and healed in a couple of weeks.  If you think you'll regret doing it, you may want to have a sit down with your dh, though.
  • We had DS circ'd at 2 weeks old and he's totally healed and fine now.

We weren't in the room for the procedure, but were able to stay in the office and feed him for 30 mins after he was finished.  Our doctor used the plastibell method (google it) and it fell off about 5 days after the circ.  We were able to bathe him regularly at night as per doctor's instructions.  He was fine afterwards, just his regular self, he napped a lot that day.

I think it was more traumatic for me though as I lost my sh!t when we got home.  DS cried a lot in the office when we tried to feed him, but we were able to get him calmed down before we even left. We just loaded him up with vaseline both on him and on the diaper at every diaper change to keep him from sticking to the diaper.

  • We chose not to do it and I'm so glad.  One less thing to worry about!
  • Our son was circumsized just 2 days after he was born.  He was a little fussy and didn't want to eat..   It healed about a week or so afterwards.

  • Yes when he was in the hospital. He healed in 2 weeks.

I friend of mine had it done when he was 18 and he said it took months to heal. He had infections all the time so he had to get it done. Once it did heal he had no more problems. He wished his parents would have done it when he was a baby.

  • Ditto pp, research it a bit. My OB circumcised my son -  new rule about OBs being actual surgeons - and she used a type of nerve block to numb the pain. They gave him something sweet to distract him from the injection, then he was good to go.

It made me feel much better knowing he wouldn't feel the pain. The care afterward isn't much work at all. You just dab some Neosprin or A&D ointment on the penis during the diaper change. That's it. My son never seemed to show any sign of discomfort during diaper changes (other than the normal "hey, you're wiping my bum with a cold wipe" discomfort).

  • DS didn't react at all...you'll just use the ointment to keep the scab from sticking to the diaper and when it heals in 7-10 days you will be back to regualar changes and baths.  A lot less freaky than it looks.
