teeth brushing help please

My DS is almost 13 months old and has 8 teeth.  4 top, 4 bottom.  I know I'm supposed to get in there and give them a good brushing (per the doctor's instruction) at least once a day but I am finding this an almost impossible task!!  DS will open his mouth when he sees the toothbrush (we've used the finger brushes and the little kids brushes) and he likes to chew on them but its not very effective for actually cleaning the teeth.  He will let me brush one or two strokes over the top or bottom before he closes up and bats me away, moves away, turns his head etc.  So I KNOW I'm doing a lousy job at the teeth brushing thing, I just have no idea how to fix it!  Tips??????

  • That's about how teeth brushing goes at our house.  I figure she's getting used to the brush at least.  I think when she can do it herself it will go better.  Until then, we'll keep trying.  I let DD chew, so I figure that has to be helping!

  • we only have 2 teeth at this point.  during the bath i get in there with the wash cloth and wipe them down.  dentist gave us a baby toothbrush, but it's more of a toy for right now.
  • I just started brushing DD's teeth a few weeks ago. I started by letting her watch me brush my teeth. Then I got her a little toothbrush and let her play with it while I changed her for bedtime. She'd chew on it and rub it on her gums. I'd take it and act like I was brushing my teeth, then i'd say "lets brush your teeth" and she'd totally open her mouth and show me her teeth! I made up a whole song about brushing teeth to the tune of "Row Row Row your boat". lol

I just started using the toothpaste last week and she doesn't mind it at all. She sits there w/her mouth open and lets me brush her teeth and gums. Not for like 5 minutes or anything, but a good once-over of her whole mouth. I think she likes the sound of the brush against her teeth, plus I sit her on the sink and she watches me do it in the mirror.

  • Unfortunately I dont' have any tips as we are going through the exact same thing right now.  It is a struggle every night trying to brush DD's 8 teeth.  And like you I know I am not doing a good job but she just clamps her mouth shut.
