Ack! Does your baby constantly want to be held??!! Help!

ugh! Although I am a SAHM-I do have a part time gig I do from home-it's only about 15 hours a week-but geezus, I'm even having a hard time getting my work done on time and keeping the house clean --he's constantly crying if not being held--what are your solutions??

The times I have let him just cry in his crib --he just totally works himself up and is screaming and beat red after 5mins that I just can't bear to let it go any longer--

Someone on another board suggested to use a wrap -that may work for dishes but not for working on the computer....help-i'm loosing it!

  • I would suggest a wrap too. I have a Moby and a Baby K'Tan that I use and both are good. I can sit down and type on the computer as my DS is in the forward facing postion. I can't wash dishes in it though (not sure how you're able to do that).

My DS loves to be held all the time, but he also likes his jumperoo and his exersaucer. He can sit in those for 15-20 minutes and give me some time.....

Hang in there - it does get better as they get more active.

  • I was pt WAHM for a while after DD was born. Basically I would hold her/put her in the sling until she calmed down. Then I could usually sit and hold her and work on the computer. The sling was still on, acting as a 3rd hand for me to keep her from falling. Plus I had my laptop on a Table Mate tv tray - it's one of those things "As Seen on TV", a TV tray with the legs just on one side so it can pull up close to you. I would even nurse DD and pull the computer up so that it covered her slightly and do my work. Honestly I don't think I could have done it without it.

  • I have the same problem...DS wants to be held all the time. I have a Moby and it has been a lifesaver. I have both hands free to do things and he is happy and falls asleep everytime I put him in it. He only likes his bouncy seat for a max of 15 minutes and his swing even less.

  • I was also going to suggest a sling.  I have a Zolowear ring sling and it allows for you to wear baby in a forward facing position or you can have them face your chest (if they are sleepy).  I could type on the computer with her like that...

Otherwise, how about a bouncer or swing?  Or an exersaucer (sp?)?    Someplace he could be that's near you yet on his own?

Another question - is he teething right now? I know that my daughter gets super clingy when she's teething or doesn't feel well.  It can be a bit maddening...

  • Wrap or carrier -- I have a Beco that I love. I have a laptop, so I could just put it on a counter and work standing up, but I guess that wouldn't work with a desktop computer. What about an exersaucer or jumperoo? My DD only just started playing at all by herself, so I feel your pain!

If you need to get work done and can't take care of your child to get it done, you need to hire childcare. Sorry. A wrap might work for now, but he won't stay in that much longer ... and just wait until he's mobile. I'm not trying to be harsh, but if you can't get your work done while he's sleeping, then you should look into PT daycare or a sitter.

As for the cleaning ... screw it.

ITA w/ this as well. He is a baby! Would you consider bringing your child to work at an office  or somewhere else outside the home? Just b/c you're in the house does not mean you'll automatically be able to work and take care of him. He is an infant. He needs to be held. And when he is a toddler he will need stimulation and a lot of supervision. Taking care of a child really is a full time job. I would not expect to get much work done unless he is sleeping.

My first suggestion would be to wear him in a wrap or Mei Tai or something similar.

Does he like the swing? Could you bring the swing close to where you're working on the computer? It might soothe him to know you're near and he might be comforted by the motion of the swing.

Some babies just like to be held a lot and your baby seems to be one of them.

    I agree with this too!
