pre-pregnancy test?

My DH and I decided that we are ready to TTC! Did any of you have a pre-pregnancy test with your doctor/OBGYN?  Any advice for me in TTC? How long were you off the pill (if you were on it) before trying?
Thanks for your help :)

Re: pre-pregnancy test?

  • Please read Taking Charge of Your Fertility - even if you don't chart it helps you understand what is going on with your body.  I would recommend charting anyways to make sure you are ovulating.  I have been off BC since October, but I got pg on our 2nd cycle trying (I was charting).

  • What exactly would a pre-pregnancy TEST tell you?
  • Em, it would tell you that your biological clock is ready.  It's like a timer.  :) Two lines mean it's okay to try?
  • Do you mean appointment?
  • Like a timer! Of course! But why not just use one of those turkey thermometers?
  • I am also confused on what results you would expect from a pre-pg test?  Do you want it to predict when you will get pregnant?  Wouldn't that be nice.  I think you are confusing an OPK with an HPT.

Seriously, if you haven't been to the OB/GYN in a while - make an appt.  They will prescribe prenatal vitamins and answer any questions you may have.  You should start taking prenatals right away (you can buy them OTC too w/out a script).  Oh and read TCOYF.
  • Yes, I meant an appointment. Sorry :)

  • I think the turkey therm would work better actually.  You could use it vaginally and then the little red botton thing would pop up when you're ready.
  • Now that I think about it, maybe there should be some sort of a written test before people are allowed to procreate.
  • I think i get what you are asking.  Definately read Taking Charge of Your Fertility.  I made an appointment because my cycles were extremely long and I never used bcp.  I don't want to get your hopes up, but coming off bcp can make your cycles really unpredictable.  Take prenatal vitamins.  You can do basal body temperature charting to determine ovulation dates which will help you understand when you are fertile and when you can take a pregnancy test.
  • Wow...you girls are a bit much. This was my first post here. Sorry for being exhausted and typing incorrectly.

  • A lot of doctors recommend getting a test for rubella immunity before TTC, so you might want to look into that.  (Although chances are you were immunizied as an infant).
