Drop side makes it easier to get baby in and out as it gets older and you lower the mattress. They usually do not convert to full size beds. If you are going to have a couple of kids and intend to buy only one crib for all to use, it might be a good choice.
We are only having one and bought a convertible crib that matches the rest of the furniture and she will take it with her when she goes!
I think I've heard that drop sides are dangerous, but I might be wrong. I think you only need a drop side if you or DH are on the short side and will have a hard time lifting baby out.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with the drop side. Hannah's was a drop side and we decided to get a new crib for this baby. First of all, there have been recent reports that says that they aren't really safe. Also, I rarely ever used it with Hannah and decided that I would rather have a crib that converts into a bed. Good luck with your decision!
