How the heck do you keep DC out of the trash can??

I tried a lid. LOL that made it more fun. If I put it under the cabinet it's really obnoxious for me to get to it because I sometimes need 3 hands myself to get through my child locks.

Is there a trash can out there with a locking lid? It's like crack to DD, she can't stay away.

  • We actually keep it right in the garage, just outside the door and keep a bowl on the counter (just like rachel ray) while we cook.

But we do it more for the damned dog.

  • I JUST got done telling DS no, stay out!  He is constantly dragging stuff out of it.    I was wondering the same thing about a lock or something.

  • My mom  has a stainless steal trash can that has a lock for the lid.  She has had if for a few years, so I'm not sure where she got it or what brand it is.  It does exist though, and I should invest in one too!
  • unfortunately the only thing that worked for us is putting it under the cabinet.  It's  little bit of a pain, but it's the only thing that works.

  • We got one at Target that is taller than DD.  So even if she steps on the lid opener, she can't reach up to get anything out.

She will eventually figure out that she can knock over the whole thing, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

  • Surprisingly she finally got the hint. I say a pretty light "not for babies" for most stuff (touching the remote, my laptop, about to touch the picture frames that are on our end table etc) but for the trash can (and other things) it's a more stern "not for babies" once and then a "no touching the x" while moving her far away. She doesn't like being removed from a spot she chose to be in........it's too much work for her to get back and her evil baby plans are apparently ruined....so it works.

She hasn't gone for it in over a week and she was pretty obsessed.

  • We have a trashcan with a locking lid.  I got it at Bed Bath & Beyond.

  • For awhile I had a piece of clear shipping tape on it (where she coudln't easily see it) and eventually she lost interest.  Of course, like most things, there was a second wave of trashcan diving but once we got through that with more tape and some stern "no's"  (and keeping the can as empty as possible so she can't drag anything out) she seems to be mostly over it.  It's lost it's appeal I think...

This is the can we have, too. The lock works really well. I'm glad we thought ahead to DS being mobile when we bought it in December!

Well our kitchen trash can is on the enclosed back porch.  Our bathroom one is on top of the back of the toilet.  The rest are clean so of course she leaves those alone.

  • We taught him what the trash can was for. He gets to help with dinner & is allowed to throw the garbage out. If he takes anything out he's told it's garbage & either we'll let him throw it away or we will. We also have one with a dome lid & don't let it get too full. It works great!! he's completely past the interested stage & still helps throw things away.
