Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Does your toddler bite into his food?

My almost 13 month old DS has now been eating table food much more frequently lately. I always cut things up into small pieces and he feeds himself with his hand. I was wondering at what age you can give him food, say grilled cheese, whole and they will bite into it. How old is your toddler and when did you start to give them food to bite into?

Re: Does your toddler bite into his food?

  • He does try to bite into things, but it's pretty ineffective. We'll probably keep cutting up his food into bites until he has some molars.

  • Yes, he does bite into things. Yesterday he was squealing for a cucumber I had so I gave him half. He walked around eating it (biting into it like an apple) until it was gone.
  • ds is really good with biting into his food...he's been doing it since around a year.  I gave him the gerber arrowroot cookies and he just gummed them and i think that taught him how to bite. I still cute things up like grapes and some fruit, etc.  But he bites into bread, waffles, pancakes, sandwiches...things soft like that and his dried apricots.

  • If she's feeding herself, I always cut the food into bite sized pieces. If I'm feeding her, I'll leave the sandwich, or whatever, whole and hold it so she can bite off of it. She really likes to bite off pieces.?

  • DD likes to bite into toast. She just started it within the last few weeks.
  • I give her practice on easier things like bananas and kashi bars. She is getting better and biting down with her front teeth this way but I am still holding these items out to her.
  • brit&nate.....your DD is so adorable and has the same birthday as my DS according to your ticker! :)
  • she does some things really well. she gets whole wheat ritz crackers and nilla wafers and takes little bites. i also give her grilled cheese in strips instead of bite sized pieces.

it's easier now that she finally has some teeth!

  • My DD bites grilled cheese, toast,  and sometimes even pizza.  She hates the idea of not being able to do things the way we do.  If I cut something up she will point to the whole piece that is left and push the fork away if I try to make her eat the smaller pieces first.

  • I think it was between 14 & 15 mos that he started really biting into things...
