Inducing before due date?

DH's sister is in the hospital right now being induced (her due date is July 12th). DH says that he wasn't told that anything specific was wrong, just that she was in a lot pain. Does that sound right? It's seems that something else would have to be wrong in order to induce 4 weeks early. Sorry if this is a naive question, but what would be a reason to induce so early?

Re: Inducing before due date?

  • I definitely wouldn't call that normal especially when full-term isn't even until 37 weeks and due dates can be off.

I would think there is probably a problem but perhaps the details weren't communicated.

  • If they are inducing 4 weeks early, there is most likely something wrong even if he wasn't told.  My first was induced 4 weeks early because my fluid levels were low and the placenta had aged very quickly and was calcifying.  Maybe they didn't have time to explain?

  • I'm sure there's an underlying medical condition to induce 4 weeks early. I'm on modified bedrest right now due to high BP and swelling (my Dr is worried about it turning into pre-e) but was told if it gets worse and I start having protein in my urine with vision changes I'll be induced before my due date.
  • Something is up.
  • Induced at 36.5 weeks due to pre-e.

  • "In a lot of pain" sounds like something is wrong.  Possible pre-e.
