Anyone NOT have a blood test to confirm?

My first appointment is set for 8 weeks. I called and told them I was pg several days ago, and they did not ask me to come in & confirm with a blood test. Is that unusual? I see so many posts about people who get blood confirmation or get their levels checked to see that they are doubling.... just curious.

  • Nope - didn't have one either, and my first appt isn't until 8 weeks as well.
  • I didn't have one either.
  • My sister never had one and she's had 4 kids.  I personally wanted one just to see what my HCG levels were.

  • My previous doc only wanted one because she didnt believe me
  • I only had an u/s at my first appt.  I did have bloodwork at my second appt., but the doctor told me that I'd only hear from them if there was a problem, so I haven't heard anything.

  • I didn't.  They took blood for a number of other things but, not to confirm my pg. The nurse said that the home tests are so good now that they don't bother most times.

  • I didn't have a blood test either.  I went in at 4 weeks after taking 5 home tests and they had me do a pee test, and they have had me do a pee test each time I have come in, but never a blood test.  When I asked my OB if they were going to do a blood test to check my levels she said no, not unless you had a history of problems or were spotting, none of which I have.  They did do blood work though at 4 weeks and all came back okay, it was to check my blood type etc.  I was curious because my sister always gets a blood test, however I think that is because she has a history of problems.
  • My OBs office said HPT are so sensitive now they don't routinely order blood tests.
  • No blood test until I had some spotting.  My doctor doesn't see you till 10-12 weeks unless necessary.

  • I had a battery of blood tests done on my first visit and I'm pretty sure a pregnancy test wasn't one of them.

  • Didn't have one, they said the HPT was accurate enough.?
  • Totally depends on the doc and, also, your medical history. If you haven't had history of miscarriage, I'd say it's more common than not **not** to have a blood test confirmation. I didn't go in until 8 weeks.

  • Generally, the women on here who are talking about blood tests, hCG doubling, and betas get these tests done because they've had a history of problems, or were under the care of an RE.

  • My ob offered me a script for a blood test over the phone but told me that as long as I took a home pregnancy test that it wasn't necessary.  I decided against it and am just waiting until my first appointment on Tuesday (at almost 8 weeks).

Sometimes I kind of wish I had done it because I have VERY few symptoms and have been feelings really good.  I worry sometimes that maybe I'm not really pregnant or that something isn't right (even though I'm sure that everything must be fine).

    That.

With my first pregnancy, the mw checked the levels, just to see if they were in the normal range for my dates and they were.

Since I lost that pregnancy and subsequently had an ectopic pregnancy, I have to have levels checked for normal rises/abnormal pregnancy.

Most women don't need that level of attention, and if you didn't have that, it's a good thing.

  • My insurance requires it
  • I did. I wanted to make sure everything was normal and my levels were doubling. They were 205 on a Thursday, then 1522 on Monday morning.
  • I didn't have one or pee in a cup @ the doctors... I just went for my first appt at almost 7weeks and there was the baby and the heartbeat! :)

  • No blood test, they did a pee test.  They collected blood and I guess I will find out the results at my first appointment on Thursday.

*Edit- results meaning levels, not confirming I am pg  :)

  • No blood test here.  My OB office said they see women for the first appointment from 8 - 12 weeks, no paperwork or bloodwork until at least 8 weeks.

  • hi! im 8 weeks and had my 1st visti yesterday i was shocked that they didnt do a blood test to confirm. they told me that home pregnancy tests are just as accurate. im not sure that i totally trust it but im going with all the symptoms and sickness and trusting that i am in fact pregnant. it can be discouraging but keep your chin up and know your not alone!
  • Normal. They will do bloodwork at 8w appt.
  • Nope! I didn't have one either.  They told me pregnancy tests are very very accurate and that it was probably right.  I took multiple tests a few days in a row and then one more a few days before my first appointment to make sure I still was.  Normal.

I did not.  I will not see my doctor until 8 weeks.

I think a lot of the "level checking" is for fertility patients or people who have had previous losses.

  • I didn't have a blood test or a urine test at my first appt he said the ones on the market are accurate enough. I saw him when I was 6 weeks and then again at 9 weeks. They did take my blood but it was to test for other things. .
