Babies: 9 - 12 Months

On a scale of 1 - 10, how vocal is your baby?

With 10 meaning very vocal, hardly ever shuts up and 1 meaning practically mute, never babbles or speaks.

Also, what is your baby's age?  What kind of babbling is she/he doing - mama, dada or still gurgling or growling/squealing.

Re: On a scale of 1 - 10, how vocal is your baby?

  • DD is probably a 7 or an 8. Seems like she always has something to say.  lol

  • Hmmm....maybe a 6 or a 7?? ?He never talks when I want him to (on camera, for other people, when I try to make him say "mama" or "dada)...but when he's playing on his own he is usually babbling/laughing to himself! ?It's cute.

  • About a 6, but on volume a 10.  He likes to scream really loud right now for no reason.  Especially in the grocery store, we are those people.
  • 4ish

She gets in the mood to babble (ma, da, ga, ba, raspberries, and lots of screams that make her sound like a pterodactyl) but other than that, she is much quieter than her sister was.

  • i'd say a 7.  she's 8.5 mos.  she's doing her d's and b's right now.  she can also imitate my sounds very well.  no real words yet.

  • My DD is around 15!  She is very loud and her screams are so high pitched that only dogs can hear sometimes!  She is also constantly babbling and making noises too.  The only time she is quiet is when she is really sleepy in the car.

ETA: She is 10 months old.

  • 8 months, 3 weeks

DD has days where she is a 7 and days where she is a 3.  She goes in spurts...a few days on followed by a few days off, it seems.

She is currently working on bbbbbbuh.  Not buhbuhbuh or bababa, just a long single bbbbbbbuh.

She had a yayayaya and a lalalalalala phase.  We have heard an occasional guh and duh, but I mean occasional.

On her "7" days, it is mostly "ahhhhhhhhh" softly in a singy voice, changing her pitch and holding out the sound for a few seconds then starting overs.  She also yells "AH," squeals, raspberries come and go, lip smacks and tongue clicks come and go.

I would say this come and go stuff has been going on since 5 1/2 months.  Overall, I think my child is quiet and not leading the pack with speech development (a little annoying as I am a speech pathologist!)

  • Not very vocal I would say. Maybe a 4. He's more of a mover, crawler, climber (and now walker).

He babbles, says dada, mama and "t" for cat. He makes monkey noises when I say "what does the monkey say?" and he whistles. He's not really quiet, but not a verbal star. He'll be a year on the 27th!

  • ds is about a 15 as well, both for volume and amount.  he talks all of the time.  we actually think he started singing recently too (not words, just the way he is vocalizing-dh and i are both music teachers so he is sung to ALOT).

he is almost 9 months.   he says mama, dada and just about everything other consenant/a combination.

Ok, this is exactly like my DD.  She's hardly vocal at all.  The only days she's really vocal is the days she goes to daycare.  She hasn't been in three weeks, and sne's nearly mute now - hardly makes any sound no matter how I try to stimulate her.  I read to her, sing to her, talk to her - nada.

  • 100! I can't talk to anyone without him talking over me :)

  • Nat- DD is also pretty quiet.  I'd say she's a 3 or 4.  She has to get in moods to talk and they don't last long usually.  I just try to always talk back to her and encourage her when she does do it.
  • James is a 4-5.  Lucy is an eleventy billion.
  • 10...DS talks constantly (he is a year old). He says mama, dada, pup pup, bye bye, hi, hey, up, yes, shu up (yes that is shut up, he heard my mom say that to the dogs once), uh oh, duh, nana, papa. He has started putting two words together, today he said bye bye mama..needless to say the pediatrician has warned me that I live with a parrot since he is saying so much he is going to start repeating what I say here soon...wonderful!
  • I would say a 8 or 9! He is 8 months old. He says dada and I think I hear him saying HI somettimes...and all kinds of strange sounds!!
  • 8. She loves talking. When she gets comfortable, she won't shut up. She makes loud screeching noises in restaurants, the grocery store etc. She's nearly 1 year.

Is she an observer?  My DD watches everything and can be very serious.  I think (make myself feel better by believing) that she is just reserved and her overall lack of babbling is a result of her personality.  I also sometimes think that I she has so much coming in - us talking, singing, reading to her - that she doesn't need to talk for herself.  Again, my own rationalizations to make me believe she is doing just perfectly =)

  • i'd say about a 7 or 8 but only in the last month (she's 10.5 months) before that i would say a 5-6.?

  • My dd is 10 months old about an 8-9 on the loudness scale.  She does the high-pitched screeching thing, but also babbles with lots of bas, das, mas, doh (which is her "dog").  She is going through a spurt of mimicking (sp) everything we say.  Yesterday she said "hello" clear as day after I said it to her.

  • K ranges from a 3-7. She's just now getting more vocal. I think we talked about it when they were younger...it seemed like our kiddos were the only ones who didn't laugh.

I'm sure she's fine, but have you talked to the pedi about it? I know it's concerned you in the past.

  • Easily a 10!

She always has something to talk about and even when you think she is not talking she is whispering to herself.

Also she likes to harpee squeal to no end at her kitties

  • I'd say a 5. Sometimes he's chatty, other times quiet.

ETA: he's 7 months and says mama, dada, baba, gagaga, gooo, all that, but no REAL words. He hasn't associated me and DH with mama and dada.

  • i would say she's an 8 or 9. She's just recently started babbling (she's almost 9 months) all the time. She also loves the sound of her REALLY LOUD voice. when we're out places (like we were at the beach the other day and getting strange looks) we have to explain she's not upset, she's just talking. she doesn't really say anything but something that sounds like "heyyy".

I have never heard anyone else say their baby sounds like a pterodactyl, I may have to be your new bff.

Honestly, yeah, I am getting a little concerned.  I don't want to be alarmist or one of "those mothers" but I keep reading that she should be babbling quite a bit, and she's totally not at all.  I'm lucky if I hear 5 or 6 peeps out of her during the day.  The only time she really "talks" is when she has something in her mouth - that's when she babbles.

I think she's very alert and meeting almost all of her milestones (with the exception of crawling, but she's actually getting up on all fours today and is just about to start), but this babbling thing has me a little worried.  I read a website today that said I should start to worry if she's not babbling by this time, so, here I am worrying.  :)

try not to worry! i know, easier said than done. i was worrying about lovey for the same reason, especially after reading on here not too long ago about all these babies teh same age as her saying mama, baba, etc. but about a week ago she just started talking. all day. nonstop. it may happen like that for your LO, just all of the sudden she talks!

  • That's true.  She's like that.  A few weeks ago I said I was jealous of others on here b/c their LOs said mama already.  Literally that afternoon she said it.  I just commented the other day about how she's not crawling yet.  Yesterday and today she's been getting up on all fours and rocking, and she's now able to propel herself forward instead of scoot backwards.

So, she really does do things overnight, it seems.  Hopefully the babbling will come soon.  Watch, one day soon I'll be wishing for some peace and quiet again.  :D

  • I'll go with 10

There is hardly a moment when she isnt talking. I love it, but we are in for some expensive phone bills I think. :)

She is nearly 11 months now, but ever since her first ga-ga she has been a talker...

  • Probably an 8.  No real words, but a lot of babbling.  And she likes to squeal.  Loudly.

  • "The only time she really "talks" is when she has something in her mouth - that's when she babbles."

    Mine too.

  • I would honestly say DD is a 9. She is constantly talking/making noises. She says mama, dada, baba and then she also babbles random sounds. She is 10.5 months old, but has been vocal since even before she was really talking. She has always screeched, grunted, etc. She just likes to hear herself ;)

  • MY DD is at about an 8 on the babbling scale.  She is 7 months and 1 week old.  She can't really say actual words yet, although when we say Hi to her it really does sound like she is saying Hi back.  I wouldn't be suprised if she starts saying real words soon.
