8 weeks old - evening nap???

When does your 8 wk old nap, meaning time of day? For how long?

The reason I ask is because my DD used to take a short cat nap in the evening. Around 6 or so, only for about 30 minutes. But she seems to be fighting it recently. It usually takes 20 minutes of rocking/walking .             I  wonder if I am forcing her to do something she might not need. She's always a little fussy/sleepy this time of day, but just maybe that's her time?? She naps pretty good during the day and sleeps awesome at night.

Maybe I just need to let her decide. If she falls asleep in our arms/swing for an evening nap, then great. Otherwise stop spending half the evening getting her to nap! Just curious what other babies do!

  • It was today that I came to the epiphany that it doesn't really matter how long or when my DS sleeps. Yesterday he slept almost all morning long until 1:15, had a 2 hr nap in the afternoon, and slept for a 5 hr stretch last night (which is great for him!). Other days when I try to keep him awake, he's awake more at night. So I have learned (as of today) to let him sleep when he wants to and not to make him sleep when I think he should.

Then there will come a time when a schedule will have to be set. But for now, whatevs.?

Exactly.  Babies sleep better overall (day and night) when you let them sleep when they want to sleep.  Watch for sleep cues (yawning, rubbing eyes, fussiness) and soothe baby to sleep shortly after these cues appear.  Works great for me!

  • I think I am starting to realize that too! That evening nap just used to part of the routine she created as a newborn. Maybe shes trying to tell me something!
  • you guys should read healthy sleep habits happy child...its a GREAT book.  My pedi recommended it and it has wonderful advice about what sleep babies need at what ages.  Probably the best advice I have gotten so far since having him.
