new eye considered cosmetic?

I was just talking to a co-worker of mine.  Her 15 y.o. daughter was involved in a hit and run accident last year while riding in the backseat of her father's car.  The left side of her head was completely smashed in (sorry, I know that's graphic).  At any rate, she has had multiple plastic surgeries and is looking great!  She just got a prosthetic eye put in.  My co-worker told me that insurance will not cover the eye b/c it's considered cosmetic.  This really irritates me. It's not like someone would choose to loose and eye and replace it w/ another one. I guess you don't HAVE to replace it, but for a 15 y.o. girl, that would be hard.  I just feel very badly for them.  She is a single mother, and they are only getting a fraction of these medical bills from their insurance.  They have never found the other driver.  It just seems so unfair.

  • I work with a guy who has a fake eye. Same problem & they're expensive too.

  • That is sad. I know I've seen on the news/talk shows before about programs and charities who help pay for prosthetics. I hope they are able to find some of those resources to help.

  • That's insane!!!!  Tell her to fight that one, write Oprah, contact the local news, whatever to get this out there.  If insurance companies can cover pills for erectile dysfunction, they most certainly should cover a new EYE!  Seriously, what is wrong with this world.

I know her church has raised money, I'm not sure if she knows about other organizations that help.

I know what you mean....not getting an erection is serious, but why would a 15 y.o. girl need a new eye??  It makes me really sad. She said the eye alone is 4800.  That doesn't even count putting it in.  They also won't pay for her to get dentures to replace the teeth that were knocked out.

Maybe she should put in for an eye transplant.  That is really horrible.
  • Ugh.  That's awful!
  • hey girl! i am playing hooky today from work :)

thats awful though!!! how sad for them.  :(

  • I have a friend who lost his eye as a kid (another friend shot it out w/a BB gun).  As he got older he had to get replacements cuz his head grew--out of pocket expense, unfortunately.  His last one got damaged and he can't afford to replace it so he's w/o right now.
