I'm a photographer and definitely want to bring a camera in the delivery room. Although I want great shots with my digital SLR camera, I think it may be too much to lug around and may borrow someone's point and shoot to make it easier on DH to get some shots.
Anyone else doing this?

There is a lag in recovery time with a point and shoot, so there is a chance for a missed shot. Is your DH familiar with your DSLR?
I agree. I love my SLR, but there are some situations where it is too bulky and heavy to keep up with. DH's new cell phone takes as good of pics as our old point and shoot, so we use it.
EDIT: I will have my SLR at the hospital, but I won't have it in the operating room for the c/s.
If you don't have a P&S, put your DSLR on auto, P, AV or TV mode and give it to DH. Just make sure he knows the basics. I'd keep the center focal point as the point since that's what most people are used to and you could also pass it to a nurse or someone else. I've had medium luck with handing people (including my DH) my DSLRs since they aren't used to the weight etc, a lot of the pics come back out of focus or with pretty strong blur though, so a P&S might be the way to go.
We are just bringing the backup slr since, like you, our nice one is around $2000 and who knows what could happen at a hospital.
I'm taking my SLR with one of my cheaper lenses (28-135mm). I want good quality photos, not something to settle on, and the lighting in hospitals are horrible. Unless your P&S has high ISO capabilities, I personally wouldn't want to rely on it.
Also, for those worried about your camera being stolen: Some hospitals ask you to fill out a form with any valuables you have with you. Maybe you can ask your hospital if they do this. Or if you plan to have family there in the waiting room, you can ask them to keep an eye on it.Some professional camera shops rent cameras and lenses. They usually have them for pros who need extra equipment for a job or need a different type of equipment than they already own. They also work great to try out new equipment before you invest in buying it. Maybe check some of the shops in your area to see if you could find one.
