Point and Shoot or SLR camera?

I'm a photographer and definitely want to bring a camera in the delivery room. Although I want great shots with my digital SLR camera, I think it may be too much to lug around and may borrow someone's point and shoot to make it easier on DH to get some shots.

Anyone else doing this?

Re: Point and Shoot or SLR camera?

  • I bought a point and shoot to carry around in my purse for quick photos - and the quality in comparison to my SLR is so bad!  I would never want to have that quality for my babe's first photos.

  • I thought about it, but I think I may bring in my SLR anyway.  The photos from it are so much better.  I'll only bring one lens in with it and once family starts coming in to meet her, I'll give it to my sister to use b/c she gets how to use it a little more than DH.

  • There is a lag in recovery time with a point and shoot, so there is a chance for a missed shot. Is your DH familiar with your DSLR?

  • I agree.  I love my SLR, but there are some situations where it is too bulky and heavy to keep up with.  DH's new cell phone takes as good of pics as our old point and shoot, so we use it.

EDIT:  I will have my SLR at the hospital, but I won't have it in the operating room for the c/s.

  • No, because I don't let him touch it for fear he'll break it lol. It's a $1,500 camera that I use for my business. I may let him use my cheaper back-up SLR tho and just make sure it's on autofocus, etc.

  • I am bringing my SLR to the hospital.  I am a photographer also and would hate to have poor quality p&s pics for my LO.
  • If you don't have a P&S, put your DSLR on auto, P, AV or TV mode and give it to DH.  Just make sure he knows the basics.  I'd keep the center focal point as the point since that's what most people are used to and you could also pass it to a nurse or someone else.  I've had medium luck with handing people (including my DH) my DSLRs since they aren't used to the weight etc, a lot of the pics come back out of focus or with pretty strong blur though, so a P&S might be the way to go.

  • Awe sigh... I really want to get my husband an SLR camera.... :(

We are just bringing the backup slr since, like you, our nice one is around $2000 and who knows what could happen at a hospital.

  • I'm taking my SLR with one of my cheaper lenses (28-135mm).  I want good quality photos, not something to settle on, and the lighting in hospitals are horrible. Unless your P&S has high ISO capabilities, I personally wouldn't want to rely on it.

Also, for those worried about your camera being stolen:  Some hospitals ask you to fill out a form with any valuables you have with you.  Maybe you can ask your hospital if they do this.  Or if you plan to have family there in the waiting room, you can ask them to keep an eye on it.
  • we'll have both with us + the video camera.
  • ugh, this makes me so sad! We have two old crappy point & shoots. We really wanted to invest in a SLR before LO comes but I am not sure we will be abel to fit it into our super tight budget. I really wish we could tho, if we had it I would brign the SLR, however DH tends to be better with photos then I am anyways.

Some professional camera shops rent cameras and lenses.  They usually have them for pros who need extra equipment for a job or need a different type of equipment than they already own.  They also work great to try out new equipment before you invest in buying it.  Maybe check some of the shops in your area to see if you could find one.

  • I'll be bringing my D90 with a cheaper lens and just plan on setting it the way I want it to shoot before things get intense.  I love that it has the video mode and I think that will come in handy.
  • I am bringing my backpack with me and all my lenses.. are you willing to have to use flashlight with a point and shoot if the room is too dark? or to have shaky pictures because of low speed? I am having a c-section, so the room will be very bright for sure, so I will probably will settle with a 2.8F lens. You don't need to have something big, I think it's a good idea to take a walkaround lens. it doesn't have to be at the manual setting either. I hope you decide to take your SLR ;)
