Question re: nursing time decreasing

Is it possible that DD is becoming a more efficient nurser? We went from 45 minutes at birth down to 30 minutes then down to 20 minutes about a week ago, and all of a sudden for the last 24 hours she's been down to 10 minutes at some (not all, but a lot) of sessions. And she's not nursing any more frequently. Can 10 minutes/session be enough for a one month old?

    yes.  It is probable that she has gotten more efficient.  I think 15 min per side is average, but if she is having plenty of wet and dirty diapers then she is getting enough.

    but she's doing 10 minutes TOTAL.

    oooh - I see why you are concerned.  Still, I would go by the diapers.  HOw oftern is she nursing?  Also, you can call your pedi to go in for a quick weight check (to make sure she hasn't lost weight).  Is there a breastfeeding support group in your area (LL or sometimes hospitals have them)?  Often, at these groups they have baby scales, so you can weigh baby before and after a feeding to determine approx. how many oz they are getting.

    She's still nursing every 2-3 hours. I've been thinking I need to get into the lactation support group and weigh her. I don't have another pedi appt for 4 more weeks, though I'm sure I could take her in there as well ... She is still having a good number of wet and dirty diapers.

    You should totally go to the support group!  If for nothing else, you will get to hang with other new moms for a while - very validating experience to be around other who are going through the same thing.

    I'm glad to hear she's having diapers - if its coming out, it must be going in!

    Sounds like everything is fine.  My son will also nurse for like 10-15 mins total and that fills him up for 3-4 hours.  He is growing very well too (14 lbs at 11 weeks).  Anyhow, it may also be that your supply is well established so she gets what she needs quickly.
