Question re: nursing time decreasing

Is it possible that DD is becoming a more efficient nurser? We went from 45 minutes at birth down to 30 minutes then down to 20 minutes about a week ago, and all of a sudden for the last 24 hours she's been down to 10 minutes at some (not all, but a lot) of sessions. And she's not nursing any more frequently. Can 10 minutes/session be enough for a one month old?

Re: Question re: nursing time decreasing

  • i've heard this can happen. DS can nurse one side in 15 mins now and it used to take 30 mins.

  • my lo used to do one side for about 10-12 min and now he does it for 7-10 min.  I sometimes worry about that.  I hope it's normal though.
  • is she gaining weight? as long as she's averaging an oz a day you're good
  • Oops, thought i posted this on bf board, but i appreciate the feedback!
  • my DS went down to 8-10 minutes total around 1 1/2 months. My pedi was not concerned at his 2 month appt because his weight gain is great, so as long as your LO is gaining weight well I wouldn't worry.

FWIW, at the same time that DS shortened his feeding times, I could tell that my letdown was pretty fast. He would be practically choking it down and would pull off with milk all over his cheeks and chin breathing heavily, lol. So I knew he was getting plenty, but if you are concerned your LO isn't eating enough, make sure to try both sides and maybe change LO's diaper in between to wake her up a little.

She's like this with my left side. I worry it's coming too fast.

  • My LO used to nurse for 40-45 min and is now down to 7-8 min on each side and having the same amount of wets and dirties a day and growing like a weed, so I say yes its normal
