I LOVE this show. Dance shows are so much better than AI because it's a lot less subjective. Either you can dance or you can't. And for some reason, I really like Mary's loud obnoxiousness. It cracks me up.
I love SYTYCD! While I'm not quite sharing your Mary love as a dance teacher she at least makes sense. Her corrections are usually spot on unlike Paula who never knows what the hell she is saying. I was so mad last night. We were having really bad storms and the stupid weather people kept cutting in updating about the weather. I missed Tyce's contemporary & Wade's piece and one other I can't remember right now. Stupid weather!
It's one of my favorite shows! As a former dancer, I love that there's a show that actually showcases extremely talented dancers. Like, on American Idol, the finalists are never all amazing singers. We're lucky if one or two are. But on SYTYCD, they are all just incredible.
I love that show and my DH watches it with me too, even if it's slightly begrudgingly. I think this season is going to be really good. I don't like it when it ends up being all comtemporary dancers at the end though. I don't know who will go home tonight, it was a pretty close competition last night, no one stuck out in my mind as having a definitley going home vibe.

As a dance teacher, I can tell you why it is mostly contemporary dancers who win. Contemporary dancers usually have the most training. Training = technique. If you have good technique, you can pick up any style of dance much easier. That is why the hip hoppers have such a hard time. For the most part hip hop and breaking, while they have technique, it is exclusive to that style of dance. When you see someone with a lot of technique, especially a strong ballet background, they will go far. As long as they can branch out of the ballet only world. I am not a ballerina but all of our kids have to take it. Without a strong foundation it is hard to pick up so many styles so quickly.
I also LOVE IT! Soooooo much better than Dancing with the Stars as these kids are actually amazingly talented dancers (and the choregraphy is at a different level)

Yeah, watched it and LOVED it. Though even as a former (amateur) ballroom dancer I wish they kill Foxtrot. It's just not fair to the couples because it is so much less visually captivating than other dances performed. If you really want to add Standard make them do the Tango!
And I was so excited to see Asuka and Kayla [sp?] because I liked them so much in Vegas but I thought neither performed that well.
I'm glad to see many former dancers/dance teachers on the board! Add me to the list!
Loving SYTYCD.
And you're right about technique. Joshua won last year, not only b/c he was great with hiphop, he also excelled at other styles.
I didn't like the cha-cha (Poker Face), or the 2nd hiphop number. Blech.
The other ones were good - but I also feel Tyce could be a little more intricate and challenging with the broadway stuff. These dancers can do a lot more than that!
I wonder who's going home tonight.
PLUS we have a bonus - I'm Canadian and we also have a Cdn SYTYCD. It's starts right after the US version ends. Produced by the same people, same theme song, some of the same judges (JeanMarc, Mary, Mia, etc). I can't wait - what an entertaining couple of months it's going to be!
I'm not a dancer, but I wish I was and I agree with everyone. I loved Josh and Katie last year and I think the talent this year is awesome. I also agree about the Foxtrot, but I think they do venture into Tango at some point.

Interesting. I didn't know that. I have no dance background and really no rhythm. I just like to watch the people and I find the contemporary is less interesting to watch especially a lot of the solos when they dance for their lives. However I have found a lot of the Mia Michaels pieces very interesting. I like that older girl, the ballerina best on this season so far and Philip the hip hop guy.
Oh yes, I absolutely love this show. I haven't watched yesterday's episode yet b/c I like to watch them both on Thursday night so I can immediately know who goes home.
I can't stand Mary, though. I like her when she's not acting crazy, but when she does the screaming thing, I want to throw the remote at the TV.
My absolute favorite choreographer is Mia. She's incredible. I can't wait to see what amazing stuff she churns out this year.
And FWIW, I despised contemporary dance until a few years ago. To me, it's really one of the few forms of dance where you can tell a powerful story and engage everyone who is watching you. I love all styles, but contemporary speaks to me more than any other style - esp. Mia's dances.
