Anyone NOT interviewing pediatricians?

I was given a welcome book today for the children's clinic affiliated with the hospital I'm birthing at. ?There's 9 doctors and their bios in it and the nurse who gave it to me named a few of the "favorites" and told me to pick from there if i wanted. ?I asked if I couldn't meet with them first and she said I could in such a way that I was waiting for her to add a "but," although she never did. ?Why wouldn't I want to meet them first?? ?Is anyone just going with a random pediatrician?

  • I never did. Our pediatrician did a small talk during our Child/Parenting Class we took. He seemed nice so we chose his practice.

  • This probably isn't the answer you're looking for, but I'm not "interviewing" my pediatrician.  The only reason I'm not is because she was MY pediatrician when I was young, and she knows me pretty well.

If you're more comfortable meeting with the pediatricians, by all means, set up an appointment.  This is your baby, not the nurse's - you need to be reassured.

  • I am.  Mainly because there's a shortage of pediatricians here and my FI aunt managed to get LO with the one her kids go to.  It's either that, or clinics.  It's hard to be picky about family doctor's here.

  • I'm not only because I'm usin the one that DD goes to now. But I didn't have a doc when I went to the hospital for DD either. I just used the docs there.  Their office is right next to the hospital and next to my OB doctor office. I haven't been disappointed with them yet.
  • DH and I decided on our pediatrician a few weeks ago - without an interview. My OB's nurses told me their favorites and gave a basic run-down of each one and their practices. My BIL also worked with our pediatrician on a few rotations from his job as a physician's assistant. Both BIL and SIL say they would go to him in a heartbeat with their kids, and we completely trust them.

DH and I probably would have interviewed, but we trusted our medical staff and family, not to mention our schedules are completely opposite these days and we didn't have time!

  • I didnt when DD was born I asked around my family and friends and almost everyone one of them said the same guy. And boy was I glad I went with him, he's such a great dr and is only 5 minutes down the road  : )
  • We aren't...not because I don't want to, but because he's the only show in town.

  • We might not, but that's b/c I am probably using one that someone we both know uses and I am comfortable w/ her views. ;)
  • I am not, however LO's pediatrician will be the same as all the other babies in the family, I figure if he is good enough for them then he is probably good enough for LO. and If we don't like him then I will start interviewing others.?
  • I am not.  We are going to use the one that my nephew uses.

This.  One of the joys of living in a small town!  I've never heard anyone complain so I don't see why we need to drive an hour to see a different one.

  • Thanks for the input! ?I don't have any friends or family in my area to glean recs from, so I guess maybe that's why I'm kind of bent on speaking to them first. ?Its nice to have a catalog of docs to choose from though! ?

    ?

JCM - Have there been no more meetups? ?I haven't gotten any emails lately.?

  • I'm not but it is because I will take the baby to the same family doctor that I started going to about two years ago. The office is right down the street from my work and will be less than a mile from daycare.

  • I just went with a rec from a friend. Never met him, but my friend swears he's wonderful. No one says you have to say with them forever. If I don't like him, I'll move to another one.

I didn't.  I called a practice this morning and asked if they were accepting new patients, and they were, so we'll set up an appointment after the baby is born next week.  There are about 15 or so doctors in the practice, so the chances that I will not like all of them are slim.  Plus they have three offices that are convenient to us.
    I HAVE CHILDREN.
  • i'm not.

my ob recommended a practice - he sends his kids there and likes it. i looked at their site and they have what they believe and about each doctor and their policies, and it looks good to me. they are affiliated with the hospital where i will deliver, so they are already on my chart as being the peds, so they will be alerted when my LO is born and will come and see him.

I'm using my friends pedi.  She was refered to this guy by a Dr she worked at in the ER.  And I figured if a Dr will bring his child to this Dr than he must be pretty good.  Not to mention my friend likes him as well and has no complaints and...

I've seen a picture of him and what is wrong with a little eye candy when you bring your LO in for check-ups. Wink

  • We're sharing a nanny with our downstairs neighbors who just had a baby, so we're planning to use the same pedi as well and try to schedule regular appointments so the nanny can attend them with us. Makes sense since she'll be with the kids so much. We trust our neighbors implicitly so I have no problem using the person they selected (who came recommended by a friend of theres who is a pediatrician). The only issue is that I work in a hospital and I want to make sure this doctor would be comfortable referring here if the baby needed a specialist. I'm fine seeing a general practitioner who's conveniently located to our home but if something was wrong I'd want the baby in my hospital.
