Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

My two cents about 'how old is too old for a bottle'...

It really annoys me when people make such blanket statements like "They should be off bottles at a year."  There is no "should" when it comes to babies....as they are all different and reach areas of their development at different times.

I have a child who until about a month ago had a horrible gag reflex and was not able to eat any table food without gagging and/or throwing up.  Even now, he can eat some table food...but not all.  Every day or so, we're trying to introduce new things to see what he can handle and what he can't.

He will not drink milk.  I've tried - several times.  He will not drink formula in a sippy.  Instead, he dumps it all over his tray.  So, bottles it is.  The most important thing to me is that he's getting the nutrients he needs.  If that means it comes in a bottle, so be it.  I will wean him from bottles when he will drink milk and is getting a balanced diet from table food.  Until then, don't tell me my child shouldn't be on a bottle, or that he looks "silly".  I don't tell you how you should parent your kid, so STFU.

Vent over.

Yes  Keep the judgmental comments in check.
  • Couldn't agree more!!!! There's too much made over getting rid of the bottle or pacifier or whatever on here. Can't we just let our babies be babies and enjoy this time!
  • I agree! DH is 16 months and still takes a bottle for naps. I actually made a post asking for help because after reading all the posts "After a year, it's ridiculious for babies to be on a bottle...." I felt guilty!
  • I agree completely. My DS is very much likes yours. He has a crazy gag reflex (he just started keeping some finger foods down) and he's very attached to his bottles. My 10.5 month old would still take 6 bottles a day like a newborn if I let him, but weve finally gotten it down to 4. Things are getting better so I'm fine with him being a little "late" with this. Not every baby is ready to give bottles up at the same time. And who cares how it looks? Were not talking about 3-4 year olds here.

  • I agree.  My child's nutrition is more important to me than someone else judging me for the fact she drinks milk from a bottle.

You knew I had to chime in on this one.  I swear to God, no one in my real life bats an eyelash about this issue.  It's just people on here who get so indignant about it.  It irritates me.  Do I tell other people when their children "should" be walking, talking, etc.  No.  Because that's ridiculous...just as this is.

And thanks.  This pic was from Sunday.  A friend (and fellow nestie) came in from out of town and brought her new little bundle of joy for some friends and I to meet.  Such a sweetie pie she is!

I agree.  In general anything overly judgemental on here is annoying.  As long as you have a happy healthy kid whose business is it anyway.

  • ITA.

And Ben has FANTASTIC hair, btw!

  • Word.  You don't see adults drinking milk from a bottle or using a pacifier, so I'm pretty sure that eventually I'll get DD to stop using a bottle and a pacifier.
  • i didnt even read your post, i was too busy staring at the curly head cutie! Ben is adorable!!!!!!!!!

  • Even though Jude refused a bottle, I completely agree with you.  Unless it's interfering with their development or speech, WHO CARES??????  It's not harming them!  More often than not, I see kids who look about 2 with bottles.  Jude still LOVES his paci and I'm not going to force him to get rid of it yet just because someone made up some arbitrary age it should be gone.
  • Amen!  Our DD is almost 21 mos. and STILL gets bottles (2x/day...AM and PM).  She still downright refuses to drink enough from a cup or a sippy (she'll just sip at it, maybe only a couple of ounces ALL DAY).  DD is teeny tiny, so we add a caloric nutritional supplement to her milk (which she needs) and if the only way she'll get 16 oz of milk with DuoCal in it is to give her bottles, so be it.  I will ask the docs (her pedi and her GI) at her 2-year check-ups if we can start to wean her off, but for now, bottles it is.  Thank you for your post!

    I totally agree.

I was just having a conversation with our doctor about how babies don't read the same parenting books as we do.  Yes, Madeleine "should" be walking before she's pooping on the potty and Ben "should" be on all solids and sippies by now, but I guess they never got the memo.

God forbid we follow our children's lead.

  • Mi kid's always HATED bottles and has been exclusively using a straw cup for 2ish months, and I completely agree with you.  I had a bottle until I was 2, and my teeth are fine!  More importantly, people should worry about their own kids and mind their own business.
  • There are things that should be governed by the child's readiness, and I totally agree that bottles are one of them. Joseph has used a sippy exclusively since 10m, but that was HIS choice, not ours. We offered it regularly, and didn't push it. We honestly didn't care if he took his bottle to college.

I don't understand the constant cycle of introduction and taking away. BF until 6m, then adjust them to the bottle, adjust them to the pacifier, then take both away and introduce the sippy, then take it away and introduce a straw, then take that away and introduce a regular cup. Why not just let the kid adjust to things as he is ready and not worry about what someone else says they should be using when.

  • Yep - it's the only milk my ds gets for the day so night bottle it is! :)

  • I agree. I'm in no big rush to get DS off the bottle anytime soon. He does well with his straw sippy as far as water goes, but refuses to take milk from it. So, I offer him the straw sippy with milk everyday to no avail. I'm sure that one day he'll take it, but I'm perfectly content doing bottles until that day comes.

  • I agree!  We are still trying to just switch over to milk.

  • Yes I agree! DD will only drink milk out of the bottle and not her sippy. Making sure she drinks her milk is far more important than weaning her off of the bottle right now.

  • I love the new siggy pic! And I'm so jealous of all those beautiful curls. I could kill the bitch_at the salon who cut off Sean's. Hopefully they'll grow back and look like Ben's.
