Re: Tattooed Moms & Moms to be.... come in!!!

  • I have two (one on foot, one on wrist)

    im not getting anymore

im not sure how long you have to wait to get them.

and im not sure about the nursing either.

We will talk to our LO about tattoos and piercings when they start asking but we will make sure to tell them when it is age appropriate because that is exactly what we did.

  • I have one. Definitely not getting anymore, I hate that I have the one and really want it removed but DH doesn't think it's worth the $ since it's on my back and no one sees it but doctors and him. When I have kids, I'll tell them how much I hate mine and regret it and hope that helps.

  • I only have 1 & don't want anymore.  I will talk to my kids about it when they ask about it.

  • I have one and that is enough for me.

I will explain to my little one that it was a choice I made for myself and I thought about it for a long time.

  • How many do you have? 1

Are you planning on getting anymore after the baby comes? I would like to, I have had a design for about 3 years

How long after birth can you get more ink?  Haven't looked into it

Nursing = No tats until you're done nursing right?  I would assume so

How will you talk about body modification with your LOs when its time? I would like to make it clear that they should be sure of what they want to do because it will become a part of them and that they have to be at least 18.  I am so glad that I didn't have my first done before I was out of my teens.  I have absolutely no regrets about my tat and it is something that I designed for myself.  I know so many people who regret theirs.

  • How many do you have? 2 so far- one on my back and one on the top of my foot

Are you planning on getting anymore after the baby comes? Yes, I want a few more but who knows how many I will get

How long after birth can you get more ink? no clue

Nursing = No tats until you're done nursing right? not sure but sounds right

How will you talk about body modification with your LOs when its time?  Honestly and openly. Being that DH has tattoos, I have them and my brother has several, my children will see them early on.

  • I have 5... or 6 (depending on if you count one as one big piece or not...) They are all visible, and one is a half sleeve. I'm glad other mommies have them, too, b/c I've been getting awful stares this whole pregnancy!

I used to work in a tattoo shop, and can tell you that you should wait untill you're finished nursing to get another one, mainly b/c you don't want to risk an infection. If you're not nursing, you can get one whenever you want! HOwever, when you're recovering, your skin may be more sensitive, and higher blood volume = bleeding which could actually mess up your tattoo (which is also why you shouldn't get inked if you've been drinking. Alcohol = blood thinner)

Yes, I plan on more. One of mine isn't finished yet! I don't know what I'll say to LO, but I'll cross that bridge when we come to it. I do like that my child will not care about it, like some other kids do. Most children I've encountered are fascinated by it, but their parents tell them it's bad or wrong. I always tell those people that the difference between them and myself is that I don't care the they DON'T have tattoos, but they sure care alot that I do.

  • I have one that I adore and plan on getting more. I really want to get a nasal piercing and am waiting to get it right after LO is here. I have been teaching at a Catholic school so I couldn't get it before.

I have 4, and while I'm not planning on getting any more, I am going to have one touched up.  Not sure how long after having the baby before you can get more...probably a good question for your doc.  If my LO wants tattoos, I have no problem with him getting them once he turns 18 and can pay for them.

I have one and will more than likely never get another one. When the time comes I will be open to discuss it and tell her that when she is 18 she can do what she wants regarding that. I won't pay for it though!

Hell, by the time she's 18, tattoos will probably be completely out of style.

I have two, one on my back and one on my foot. I don't plan on getting anymore, however, I still need to get the one on my foot finished (I was supposed to this past Christmas when we were in Miami, but that's when I got my BFP). I plan on waiting until I am done BF before I do this.

We'll talk to LO about it when he asks. Seen as how DH and I both have them, I wouldn't have a problem if he wanted one. However, he'll have to wait until he's old enough to make a responsible decision about it, just like we did.

  • I have approximately eight.  I started working on a half sleeve before I got pregnant, so I don't know if I should count what's done as one tattoo or what.  I guess eventually I'll start to talk about them in terms of time spent getting them instead of trying to decide how many I actually have.

I do plan to get more. Lots more.  As many more as I can get away with.  I will finish out my half sleeve first and go from there.  I expect to have both arms with half sleeves and a chest piece, and a pretty good sized one on my back.

My OB told me to wait six to eight weeks after giving birth before considering more tattoos or piercings so that my immune system will be back up to par.  My tattoo artist said the same thing. OB said that she usually recommends women wait until they're done breastfeeding to get tattoos, there's really only a small risk of something going wrong (and it would be along the lines of getting Hep C from contaminated needles or something that's really unlikely to happen if you use a reputable artist), so she's not steadfast in that rule.  I plan to start working on them again as soon as I'm able to do so physically.

I figured tattoos and piercings would go along with the "everybody's different, and that's not a bad thing" talk.

How many do you have? Two, one on my shoulder and one around my belly button (which is really big right now, lol)

Are you planning on getting anymore after the baby comes? I've considered one more, but I think I'm done

How long after birth can you get more ink? No idea!

Nursing = No tats until you're done nursing right? I'm not sure

How will you talk about body modification with your LOs when its time? I already have with my oldest (she's 13). I told her that she can decide when she's 18, but I would ask that she take everything into consideration as far as selecting it and where to put it. It is best to get one where she can decide if it's shown or not.

  • I have 7 tattoos and want more. I wouldn't recommend getting a tat if you're still nursing. I already have 3 children and they know I have tattoos (I have a huge back piece). They aren't interested in them yet. My 4 year old always says mommy you have lots of butterflies on your back, it's so cute.
  • I have 9 tattoos

I am planning on getting a few more, as soon as I can

I have no idea how long you have to wait

If you can give blood soon after a tattoo (in some states) I don't see why nursing would be an issue as long as your tattoo is done by a pro

LO can get her ears pierced, but aside from that she has to wait until she's 18

  • I have two, a tramp stamp and paw prints on my foot.

DH has a couple in highly visible places, and a half-sleeve, so our kid will definitly know and question them.

Both us us will be getting more.

Younger kids are fascinated by them, a friends kid learned to potty train my getting "tattoos like *dh*" as an award.  But they don't really question them to much.  Our kids will have to wait until they are 18, just like we did, and we'll point out they were very permanant, well thought out decisions.

  • How many do you have?

3 But there's one I want to remove.  It's not distasteful.  It's small - I just don't like its location anymore (small of back a'la "tramp stamp") and I can totally do without it.

Are you planning on getting anymore after the baby comes?

If I do get one more, it's going to be a very special one.  DH designed our LO's name (Layla) in Arabic in the shape of a heart.  It's about 2-3 inches in diameter and its really cute.

How long after birth can you get more ink? Nursing = No tats until you're done nursing right?

Not sure, I probably won't get mine until LO is 2-3 years old to be safe.

How will you talk about body modification with your LOs when its time?

Once she asks, and like someone else here said, I will tell her that I thought about them for a long time (excluding the tramp stamp which I now regret) before getting them.  No tats for her until she is 18, though, and I would advise her to think about it for at least a few months.  And NO lower back tattoos.  lol

  • I have two....one on my stomach (its enormous right now) and one on my shoulder. I dont regret either, but I know so many people who do. A lot of my friends rushed out to get inked and just picked some random design they thought was cool at the time (tribal arm band, anyone?) and now they hate it. My favorite is my scorpion, because it represents the Scorpio that I am, and I will always define myself as a scorpio-its just part of my personality.

I dont know right now if I will ever get any more. it seems like we have a lot more pressing financial matters coming up, so it would definitely be years down the road.

I plan on taking the opposite approach to what my dad took with me....he basically threatened me and told me I would never get a tattoo as long as I lived under his roof. So what did I do the second I moved away and went to college? Exactly.

I have 5 and I definitely want more. It's getting hard to find places to put them so that it's "work appropriate" though!

You definitely have to wait until you're done nursing.

She can get one as long as she's 18 and can pay for it herself like I did. I will also explain to her that all of my tattoos have a meaning and that she should be sure of what she's getting because it's there for life.

  • I have 3 already - all are visible (well, one is a pair of paws on my abs, so visible if I am in a swimsuit or maybe one of my hot little pre-pg outfits). I've also got one on the back of my neck and a larger one on my upper right arm.

I would love to get more, but it will be a while, since they are expensive, and DH wants more, too.

My kids will be very used to seeing tattoos, obviously, so any questions they have will get answered with no shame. When they are 18 they can do whatever they want as far as tattoos and piercings go, but I don't want to be the mom that lets 16 year olds do it, just because I know that what you love at 16 you may not love forever!!

  • How many do you have?  5

Are you planning on getting anymore after the baby comes? Yes

How long after birth can you get more ink?  I am going to wait until after I an done BFing.

Nursing = No tats until you're done nursing right?  I would assume so, just to be on the safe side.

How will you talk about body modification with your LOs when its time?  It is an individual choice to make once you are of legal age to make it.  I had to wait until I was 18 & so will he.

  • How many do you have?

I have 2 -- one on my wrist and one on my hip bone area

Are you planning on getting anymore after the baby comes?

I would like to, because the one on my wrist has stars symbolizing my family (parents, brother, and sis), so I'd like to add more stars representing the family I've started w/ DH.

How long after birth can you get more ink? Nursing = No tats until you're done nursing right?

I don't know about these Qs. Something to look into w/ plans for more ink.

How will you talk about body modification with your LOs when its time?

I will probably wait until LO asks about it, and explain I was an adult when I made the choice and thought about it very carefully, etc. Same thing I tell my brother and sister -- I'm the oldest.

  • How many do you have?  1 (and 3 in the making)

Are you planning on getting anymore after the baby comes?  yes

How long after birth can you get more ink? right away I believe.  I don't know why not.

Nursing = No tats until you're done nursing right? right, that's why I never got my next one (I nursed until I was pg again)

How will you talk about body modification with your LOs when its time?  I got my tat when I was 18 and my mom was mortified: "What will your kids think?"  I laughed and said they won't know their mama any differently and most of their friends parents' will have tats also.  DS can identify my tattoo when I ask where it is.  I am happy for them to want tattoos also but I do have a rule for myself that I would like for them to follow: you have to have wanted it for 2-3 years before actually getting it done, and it has to have meaning to it.
