1st Trimester

The question I hate to ask.... Constipated!

Is it safe to take certain all natural medicine to help with constipation?  I remember when my mother was going through chemo, she used to take Senecot and Myralax, and they helped a little bit.  Just a little scarred about taking ANY thing non-vitamin in the first trimester.  Has anyone else had this problem?  I can't go on like this!Tongue Tied

  • I told DH last night that I was having trouble going, and he told me to go eat a Big Mac, and then I would have NO trouble. Helpful, huh?

Sorry though, I don't know about the meds.

  • I don't think you can take Miralax. My Dr. said that Colace is fine.  Try to up the fluids!
  • Short term solution take colace. As a smart bumpie once said "colace in the p.m. for a bm in the a.m."

Long term solution: Fiber choice, two tablets daily, you'll be so regular, you could set your clock by it.

  • My dr also suggested exersice as a way to help and uping leafy green vegetables.  She said to avoid white rice, white bread, bananas, and applesauce.

    This!

  • My doc said milk of magnesia once or twice a week was safe or mixing those fiber powders into your drinks. I have been eating a salad after dinner every night before I go to bed. Just lettuce with dressing and it has really helped me go in the mornings!

  • I think you an take Colace and Milk of Magnesia.  I have the same problem.  I take benefiber, work out an hour a day and eat lots of veggies all to no avail. It has gotten a little better since I switched to Flintstones, but not much.

  • With my first I was seriously constipated my great aunt told me to drink sugar milk ( sounds nasty I know) it helped actually. Those stool softners didnt help me. If it got really bad my doc okay'ed enemas.

  • Hi hon,

I feel your pain, i have never been this backed up in my life! but natural releif is usually better than meds, so here are some things that work 99.9% of the time:

#1 Prunes and apples are natures plumbers, so stock up on those and have at least 1-2 apples a day and a handfull of prunes.

#2 Water and exersize...it doesn't have to be strenuous, but a walk around the block will promote your GI motility and help push things through.

So have an apple and prune snack before you go for a walk with a bottle of water and i can almost guarantee relief by morning!

Hope this helps, feel betterBig Smile

  • Hi there,

Sorry to hear you are having so much trouble.  You can take stool softners but not laxatives.  Ask your doctor to recommend one for you.  By the way.. People are almost always recommending prunes... but there are more fiber rich food out there... check this out:

    1 ounce Almonds  =    17g of fiber
1 cup cooked black beans = 15g of fiber

    5 prunes = 3g of fiber

    Good luck!

  • When I was a coffee drinker I was super regular!  So now, I am having similar issues despite taking in 40+ grams of fiber/day.  I have just added prunes to the mix and hopefully that will help.  I may pick up some Colace soon...so far water + fiber + walking is not doing the trick for me.

Married2MrWright, I was a coffee drinker as well, LOVED IT, so that could have a major affect.

The other frustrating part is that all the foods I am supposed to eat, just not appealing, and most of them, like vegetables, just do not mend with me right now (MS).  I see my doctor the 19th, so hopefully we find solutions!

Thank you for all your help everyone!  Glad to know I'm not the only one!  Hope everyone feels better soon!

  • Lots of yogurt with live culture does the trick for me!!! (together with water, exercise and a high fiber diet). Plus, the yogurt will help you with your calcium too.

    Good luck!
