Trying to Get Pregnant

TTC Question

I haven't been on birth control since December and had been on it for almost 9 years.  I know it takes your body a little bit of time to "reset" itself, but how long!? We are trying to get pregnant, we have sex all the time and have had no luck.  I had a period in the beginning of February and that was the last time, before that I had skipped two months.  I have always been "regular" but all of a sudden it started freaking out... then I went off the bc.  This sounds like a ridiculous question but, if I am not having a period, am i still ovulating??? I have decided to get an ovulation kit and start monitoring it.  Does any one have any suggestions on what I could do? I haven't visited my OBGYN yet, I will next month but I am just curious if there is any thing I could be doing or if I am wasting my time since I haven't been having a period.  Please help! Im getting pretty anxious now...

Re: TTC Question

  • Step 1: Go to your library or bookstore.

Step 2: Check out or purchase "Taking Charge of Your Fertility."

Step 3: Read it. It explains a lot of stuff we were never taught about our bodies and cycles and getting pregnant.

    Step 4: Start charting. Now.

Step 5: Go see your OB/GYN, and you can take your chart with you.

    GL!

  • It can take up to a year for your body to readjust.  In the mean time you should start charting your cycle.  There is no way to know if you are ovulating unless you are charting and checking your BBT  (Basal Body Temperature) and CM (Cervical Mucus).  Pick up a copy of the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility and check out www.fertilityfriend.com to chart.  This will let you know what is going on with your body.  It is suggested that if you go 60 days or more with no period then you should contact your doctor.  Good luck!

  • Def talk to your Dr.  I wanna say that if you haven't had a period in 60 days, it's time to talk to your Dr about it.

Also, read Taking Charge of Your Fertility.  It's our gold standard around here and it will teach you about charting your temperature to confirm ovulation.

Also, have you taken a test to make sure the reason you haven't had a period is bc you're pregnant?

    Hope that helps!

  • i think you should call your Dr.

Excellent summation!  I didn't have the energy to type out all of that. Thanks!

  • If you haven't had a period since Feb, you should see your OB.  They will likely give you a med like Provera to induce you cycle.  I just finished my first round of that med.  It sometimes takes a long time to adjust, but my Dr. gave me Provera after 75 days of no menstruation, and yours has been longer than that.

In my personal opinion I wouldn't waste your money on an ovulation kit until after you see your OB and get your cycle more regualated.  If you are ovulating and have not concieved, then you should be having a period.

I'm hoping that after this first round of Provera my body will decide to kick itself back into gear, but it may not.

     Good Luck to you!

  • Excuse me if I'm repeating stuff, I didn't read the other replies, but just wanted to say I'm in a similar boat.  I went off BC in Sept. after being on it for about 9 years.  Totally thought I'd get pregnant right away (yeah, I know, wishful thinking) and since DH wanted to wait 'til after he was done w/school in May to actually have a baby, we just were careless about trying 'til Jan.  My 1st couple cycles were normal, then in Dec. it got longer, so I started going to acupuncture and charting.  The acupuncture seemed to help at 1st, but then a few months later (and still not pregnant), my cycles got longer again.  My last cycle was a little more normal, down to 35 days, but still not great.  And I'm still not pregnant.  Maybe our timing was off since my cycles weren't normal, maybe my body is still trying to rid itself of the BC, I don't know.  I've been trying really hard to be patient and not get frustrated, but it's hard.

I guess I don't really have any good advice for you right now, except to try to be patient and maybe look into trying acupuncture (I've heard of way more women who do it that have better experiences than I did) or some of the supplements recommended for helping to regulate your cycle.  Good luck, I hope things work out well for you soon.
