3rd Trimester

favorable vs. unfavorable

Doctors throw these terms around a lot when talking about the cervix. Are they referring to dilating and effacing? Progressing steadily? Being able to go into labor without being induced? What exactly are the terms describing?

Re: favorable vs. unfavorable

  • Currently, my cervix is unfavorable = hasn't softened/dilated/effaced at all, if they were to induce right now (breaking water, pitocin) it may not be completely effective

  • My docs use those terms in regard to the cervix dilating. Favorable is 2-3cm.

  • Look up "Bishop Score".  I believe that generally in first time pregnancy, a "favorable" cervix is a modified Bishop Score > 8.

Ditto this.  Favorable to my understanding has always meant a good candidate for induction.
