3rd Trimester

1st tri question

Don't flame me... I know it's fine... or if you're bored and just want to flame, that's fine too, it won't hurt my feelings.

My doctor told me to start taking Extra Strength Tylenol for my back pain.  It says on the front "contains acetametophin"  I thought this was "bad" for the baby?  What am I really thinking of that's bad??

Re: 1st tri question

  • My dr. said Extra Strength Tylenol and Excedrin are fine, so I wouldn't worry.  Sorry if this doesn't really answer your question.

  • I've also been told that tylenol is fine.  I believe the other pain killers like Aleve and Aspirin aren't though.

  • My Dr has said that both regular and extra strength Tylenol are ok.  I think Ibuprofen is bad... is that what you're thinking of?

  • I was told that acetametophin is fine.   That's what I've been taking during pregnancy.

  • I'm not worried, I know it's fine... I just can't remember what is "bad" for the baby and I thought it was acetametophin (however it's spelled)

    This.

  • Acetometaphin - the main ingredient in Tylenol was the only 'safe' pain reliever on my doctor's list - aspirin and ibuprofin were not.

  • Ibuprofen is probably what you're thinking of.?

  • you're probably thinking of ibuprophen (aka advil) which is bad for 3rd tri.

edit: also acetacyllic acid (aspirin) is bad too.

both essentially affect your blood's ability to clot which is why its bad in pregnancy since you need your blood to flow freely.

  • you are probably thinking of ibuprophen. Thats why we can't take motrin, or advil. Acetaminophen is about one of the only things that is safe.
  • Acetametophin = tylenol (it's the generic name and tylenol is the brand name).  It is perfectly safe in pregnancy.  In fact, it's the ONLY safe pain reliever, according to my doctor.

"Bad" (ie, not in pregnancy) pain relievers = motrin (advil), asprin, aleve, excedrin (because it contains asprin)

  • If memory serves, aspirin and ibuprofen are bad during pregnancy.  Acetaminophen is fine.

My Dr said Extra Strength Tylenol is ok, and it has been a lifesaver for back pain, thats all I have taken they say ibprophen and asprin are the bad ones.
  • acetamentophin is fine, apsprin and ibuprofen are not.
  • Tylonals fine.

NSAIDS are bad... these include ibprophen asprin and neoproxen.

an NSAID would be marked bc of the high risk reactions when mixin with other meds
