I just got a new Canon Rebel as a late mother's day present. I'm trying to get some great shots of DS, but the flash washes him out and without the flash it's way too dark.
Either wait until you have natural light or invest in a external flash. You could try turning it on "M" then turn your ISO up to 800 or higher, then turn down your shutter speed to about 50, then turn your f/stop to the lowest it'll go. It might work but you have to hold the camera really still otherwise it'll be blurry.
My first sig pic was taken with our canon rebel and I'm still learning. But I always try to wait for natural light cause as an amateur its the easiest for me.
I agree. The best pics are in natural light, either by a window, or outside. Worst time of the day is noon. Early morning or late afternoon, or shade, or even a cloudy day is great. I am still learning to take pics indoors without getting camera shake. I can't afford a bounce flash yet, so my pics are all taken in the daytime right now, lol!

Re: Any photographers? Either pro or amateur?
What sally said... or you could get a pop-up flash diffuser for your on-camera flash if you want to avoid the cost of an external flash.

HTH.
Sally, any idea how to adjust the ISO on a rebel under the "M"? Right now it just says ISO AUTO
*edit: nevermind...found it.

My DH got me that too! I've yet to sit down with it though. I'm hoping to plow through it this weekend.
Overcast days actually offer the best light!!!
