Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

For those not in day care

Do you do mom & meclasses or other "school" with your child? When are you planning on putting him/her into a school setting, like a morning program or other structured drop-off class.  I live in NYC and for those of you who do not know, it is a crazy competitive obsessive overachieving school environment here. Everyone is always worried about the best schools, the best programs, etc. I swore I was not going to get caught up in all of it, but it is so hard not to. Around here you have to register for everything at least year in advance.

When DD is 4 she will go to public pre-k and then public school from then on. Right now she is 19 months. We do a mom & me class once a week and also go to the library for storytime, playground, museums, etc. NY is great for free stuff for kids. When she is 3 I am going to try to put her in a 2 or 3 day class if we can afford it. I am not worried about her "academically", I just want her to get used to being in a class with other kids her age.

I can't believe I am already thinking about this stuff! Anyone else??

  • DD is already registered for the toddler program at my churchs nursery school.  All it is is arts and crafts, play time and story time followed by snack.  From there she will go through the grades till she is ready for public school.  I just want her to interact with other kids and be a child and this was the best way I found for it.  Oh and its 2 days a week half day.

  • First of all, kudos to you for keeping perspective in such a crazy competitive environment.  It actually makes me sad to think that kids need "interviews" at 3-4 years old to get accepted into preschool!  It's supposed to be for FUN for crying out loud, not for preparing you for Harvard.

We are planning to put Arlo in preschool a couple days a week at around 2.5 or so, just for the fun and social interaction piece.  He goes to the library story time, which he loves, but that's pretty much all we do at this point other than hang out with friends who have kids the same age.  It sounds like you're doing a great job and that she's really getting everything she needs at her age.  :)

  • Our Parks & Rec dept has a Mommy & Me sorta-preschool class thing that sounds a lot like the above post.  It's only an hour twice a week.  We might do that next year.  We'll do normal preschool the year before and then K.

I'm in LA and it's crazy here too.  One mom in our playgroup is already looking at preschools for next year!

  • Ds stays at our house with a nanny. He will go to preschool two mornings a week starting in August.

  • I'm a SAHM and no, we don't do any structured classes and I don't plan to.  My mom never did anything like that for us (no classes, no preschool, etc) and my sister and I excelled in school.  I'm a firm believer of letting kids be kids! :)

I have mom friends with kids around the same age and we get together, either at someone's house or elsewhere, and talk, hang out, whatever, but nothing serious.

  • We go to the library's free story time once or twice a week. We used to do a music class once a week too, but they raised the price so we quit and I just make sure to sing songs to her when we play! i plan to send her a few mornings a week to preschool when she's 2 1/2
  • I'm home on Mondays and the other 4 days Ben is our home with a nanny.  I just signed up for a local mom's group that alternates the days of the week that they meet.  The next time they have something on a Monday, Ben and I are going to go.  We plan on putting him in daycare when he's 2 - 2.5.  Mostly because I want him to have the social interaction with other kids.  I put my 15 year old in daycare when she was 2.5 and I felt like it was the perfect age for it...so we're doing the same with Ben.
  • Joseph just started a summer 1x/week baby class today. It's not a drop-off. I'm there for the whole thing. We are planning to put him in a preschool program in fall 2010, when he'll be almost 3.
  • Lily is with a nanny a few days a week. On the days I'm home we go to the library story time, Gymboree and swim lessons (not all on the same day, usually just one activity a day). Lily loves, loves, loves other kids so it's fun for her to be around them. I also like that the classes get us out of the house ~ I think I enjoy them as much or more than she does.
