I'm not a big fan of this name. I agree that it may bring about some teasing in junior high too - or maybe that's my own 7th grade immaturity that lingers... (Sounds like "Oh, feel ya")
I wouldn't name my daughter after a character as tortured as Ophelia ... who drowns herself!
There are many lovely Shakespearean names without such negative connotations ... Viola springs to mind. Maybe look in the comedies instead of the tragedies for inspiration.

My great-grandmother's name was Ophelia, and while it's kinda awesome, remember who Ophelia was. ?She went crazy and killed herself. ?
My great-grandmother went crazy, too. ?I would say no. ?There are so many beautiful Shakespeare names out there that don't have the crazy connotation... ?Viola, Katherine, Cordelia, Titania (just off the top of my head)...?

Re: thoughts on the name Ophelia
while it sounds nice, I can see this little one being made fun of SOOO much.
However it is NMS.
Same. it's a little tragic for me?
Odessa is a town in Missouri also, but I like it sooo much better!
This is my Great Grandmothers name... I would suggest using it as a MN
Same for me. It makes me think of tragedy and drowning. It is a pretty name, but the Shakespearean character instantly comes to mind for me.
Too many tragic connotations for me. Maybe as a MN?

Yep - my grandma's name is Ophelia. I think it could make a good MN choice too. It's just NMS as a FN.
My thoughts exactly, and I love Viola.
Some other lovely Shakespearean names:
Beatrice
Bianca
Celia
Helena
Katharina
Portia
Rosalind (and, of course, Rosaline)
Yes, this.

Don't forget Miranda. That's pretty, too.

I love Ophelia! I think it's a whimsical and classy choice. Much fresher than say... Olivia.
