When do you generally buy shower/wedding gifts?

So many ladies are bummed when things aren't purchased off of their registries the week before the shower, I'm not flaming your disapointment, I was there a few years ago.  But it just got me wondering....when do you generally buy gifts for showers and even weddings?

Me?  I'm a total procrastinator and buy day of or even on the way to the event.  I've wrapped a gift or two in the car...I'll admit it!

  • Ditto, if I have time to go get a gift I do, otherwise it's mostly gift cards. My family doesn't do registries, it's something I have had to get used to with DH's family and they all live out of the state so it's just easier if we do gift cards! :)

  • As soon as I know where they're registered so I can have an early "pick". I hate being stuck with leftovers.

  • i procrastinate too. at best a couple days before. if im busy.. on the way there!
  • I'm that girl wrapping the gift in my car of the parking lot. I ALWAYS buy off the registry though. Weddings are typically a check, which is nice because then I don't have to wrap Wink

  • haha ;)  i'm with you - i wrapped a baby gift in the car, in the target parking lot, on the way to a shower once!

i buy wedding gifts about a month in advance so they get the gift before the wedding and nobody has to lug it anywhere, and so i have good selection...baby gifts, usually the morning of since i'm going to the event.

  • I like to have first dibs on what somebody needs from their registry so I try to make a point to purchase something right away.  I don't want to be that person that buys something that is just going to go unused or returned.
  • I usually buy gifts in advance. I mean, if I have to buy off a registry without having to think of something something, it's easy, so I do right away.

  • I am that girl who shops asap. But only because I like to have the selection of everything on the registry. I hate waiting and then finding out there's only a few, boring things left to buy.
  • I usually try to do it when I'm near or going to the store they are registered at. So sometimes I do it as soon as I get the invite (if the store is convenient), and other times it's last minute (if I have to make a specific trip). Usually it's a couple of weeks before the event. I hate buying things last minute.

A few weeks in advance so that there's still a good selection.
  • Usually the weekend before.
  • usually the week of the shower unless I've known about it for a long time or its someone really special to me, then I'll buy gifts frequently over a period of a few weeks then assemble it a few days before the event.

  • I am a late kate at buying presents. But if there is a registry, I have the common sense to let the store know that such and such item has been purchased. Sometimes people do forget to do that.

  • I'm proud of myself if I have the gift the day before.
  • I'm a procrastinator, so as late as I can get away with it.

Earlier if the shower is out of town.  Earlier if I can't buy the gift in person and have to have it shipped.

If the shower is in town and I can buy the present in an actual store?  Maybe a week ahead at the most.

  • It all depends on the person and event. A shower for someone I'm not that close to, I'll wait until the last minute. Something for someone I care a lot about, I'll probably start early, and pick up little things here and there. I'm more inclined to shop early for an event I'm excited about.?

    This.

  • I am usually an "on the way" person. I love weddings though because writing a check takes NO time :-) and after my own wedding I know checks of any variety are much appreciated.

  • I procrastinate and I, um, don't always buy off the registry.
  • Weddings I'm pretty good about getting in advance. Showers and birthday gifts I'm horrible and usually get it on the way and wrap it in the car.

When I worked at Bed Bath & Beyond in college every Saturday morning in the summer we would print 4 copies of the registries of the people getting married that day so that when the guests came tearing in on the way they didn't have to wait for us to print them. LOL

    This.

  • For weddings - as soon as I know - I hate when there is nothing left on the registry that's good.  I usually give a gift for people my age (I'm older) and established (They don't need money.) and give cash to anyone "young" meaning in there 20's because they're getting established (They can use the money towards something big like if they're saving for a hous or the honeymoon or to clean off the registry.)

For baby showers I wait until the week of the shower and usually hate what's left.  I'll go off registry if this happens and I know the sex or buy 10 fun kids books like Good Night Moon, Pat The Bunny, Dr. Seuss and put in a BRU Gift Card for them to buys something themselves later.  If they don't know the sex I send an additonal follow up gift of gender specfic clothes as well to welcome the baby.

I tend to go overboard though.

  • Usually I will buy something a week or two before the event. I always buy off the registry if that is an option.
