2nd Trimester

question for plus-size ladies

I know it's not uncommon for women with "some to spare" (like me who was an 18/20 pre-pregnancy) to not gain much weight during pregnancy, but I'm still down the 8 lbs. I lost from daily vomiting in the 1st trimester! I feel as though I'm eating all day long snacking on almonds, string cheese, apples, raisins, and granola, but I can't seem to gain any weight, which is quite ironic given my history. My perinatologist is very laid-back and hands-off and hasn't expressed any concern. I guess I'm just wondering if any of you haven't gained any weight, or like me have lost.

Re: question for plus-size ladies

  • I am 18/20, and am down 5 lbs.  With DD I lost 20lbs in the first 2 trimesters, and only had a net gain of 8lbs.  My doctor was never concerned.

I don't know how your eating habits have changed, but with DD I started to eat a lot healthier.  And with this pg I am eating less and healthier but not as healthy as with DD.

  • If you were overweight to start, then youre total weight gain should only be ten to 15lbs according to the new "rules". On avarage you will gain one pound a week for the last ten weeks, so Im sure youll gain later. If your dr isnt worried, then why are you?

I was a 14/16, I have gained 5 lbs. My OB said she doesn't really want me gaining more than 15 lbs, I am really trying to start eating healthy and excercising more.

  • I lost 24 lbs in the 1st trimester and since haven't gained any weight, however the stomach is growing.  My doc said I will probably not gain any weight becasue of my pre-elevated weight prior to pregnancy, but baby is growing fine.  I know my meal intake has increased, lol, to say the least, but baby is healthy.  So don't worry as long as your LO is measuring fine, your good!

It's spelled "average," and apostrophes are your friend.

My question was if anyone else was experiencing something similar. My post wasn't necessarily to express worry or get advice. I'm aware of how much weight I am supposed to gain. Besides, if, as you wrote, I gained a pound a week for the last ten weeks, I wouldn't be up ten pounds, I'd be up two. It also looks as though you missed the sentence where I wrote that my perinatologist is laid-back and hands-off. That might be one reason that I'm wondering what others' experiences have been. Thanks though.

  • I was like a 14/16 and I was still down 10 lbs at my 20 week appointment.  According to my home scale I've finally gained back two lbs but we'll have to see what the Dr's scale says.  My OB is not at all concerned because baby is measuring right on track.  I really attribute it to the metabolism increase.  I'd forgotten what it felt like to be truly hungry my metabolism was so whacky pre-pregnancy.  You can really tell I've lost in my arms and face, so I'm thrilled!  As long as my Dr isn't worried I'm not either.  I'm looking at it as the possible only advantage to being plus sized and pregnant.
  • Sorry i can't be of help, i am plus size and have gained weight.  I did  not lose weight.  Good luck to you!!!

  • I lost 15, and have only gained back 4 so far. I'm fine with this. I figure if I only gain 20 lbs this pregnancy, I'll be in a good place to continue the weight loss I'd started before getting pregnant.
  • I was a 14 pre-pg.  I initially gained about 8 lbs, then lost it all, then gained back 2, so at last check up I was still only 2 lbs up.  Even so, the boobs and tummy have grown and baby is growing as he/she is supposed to so I'm not too worried.  I am looking forward to the prospect of losing my pre-pg weight easier after LO is born.  When I lost 8 lbs at my 2nd check-up my MW was actually upset.  She demanded to know if I was dieting or anything.  I told her "no, of course not" so she just chalked it up to me eating healthier since all my blood tests were fine and LO was growing fine.
  • I am 18/20 pre-pg and lost about 22 lbs in 1st tri. I went down to 203 but now as of last week am only at 230, so a total of 5lbs gain and I'm at 32 weeks.  I must admit I'm THRILLED with that knowledge, and am not concerned at all that the gain is too little.  I also eat constantly and it seems its just feeding the baby, and that my caloric intake is enough to just maintain my body and grow baby's.  Keep up your healthy eating and be thankful your body is doing well is the best advice I have for you!

  • i'm jealous of you girls who've lost weight. Sad

i was a size 16-18 prepreg and i'm already up 15 pounds (from my last checkup). i've been eating as healthy as i can (yeah, with the occasional burger and milkshake like once a month since BFP), and i'm scared to go to my OB appointment later this afternoon, because i KNOW i'm getting the weight talk.?

i don't know what to do.

but GL for the rest of you!?

  • I am also an 18/20 lady. I have gained a whopping 3 lbs.- but also gained aobut 4-5 inches on my waiste so far. I look 5-6 months pregnant- not 4months. I am hoping to only gain around 20lbs total throughout the whole pregnancy. I wouldn't worry too much about your weight loss. It sounds like you just lost a bunch in the begining and are slow to gain it back. In my opinion, that is a quality problem. I would love to be in the same boat! I would suggest that as long as the baby is healthy and meeting all the milemarkers- you are good to go. Your body is making the baby #1... as it should... :)
  • Pre-pregnancy I was a size 16. Between my 8 week appt and my 14 week appt, I lost 1.5 lbs. My doc told me to gain between 15-20 lbs overall. And I'm hoping it will turn out that way! I've sort of been trying to keep it in check, I exercise, only eat when I'm hungry and I eat pretty healthy overall (despite those oh so lovely chocolate shakes!).

  • I was a 16/18 pre pg and have not gained any as of this morning.  I lost 5lbs in first tri and then gained back up to my pre pg weight durning the last three weeks (when I quit puking every few hrs.)
