Trying to Get Pregnant

Small town vs big city.

What kind of place do you gals live in and are you happy with it?

We live in a very small town...like 2700 people. Sometimes I want to move to a larger place because there is nothing here. If I want to go out to eat, I have 2 choices besides fast food. And no way am I going to be able to get a drink with supper. It's a dry county. I can get beer, but that's all.

There's no gyms, only 1 movie theatre and it's kinda run down. No bowling alleys...nothing. But I like the fact that it's quiet, safe, and people know me. Not to mention both our families are here.

So tell me, ladies...pros and cons about where you live.

Re: Small town vs big city.

  • I'm a city girl and so is my DH. I like the noise, the fact that I can get what I want and most of it it's on close proximity. There's a lot of places to hang out, eat, relax, etc etc etc.

I like the country and it helps me rlax but I can only do it for so long before I get antsy! lol

  • We live in a city of about 175,000. It's got a good selection of shopping, dining, entertainment, and aslo has a great arts community.

We are surrounded by many smaller towns and have lots of open land around us so it's still pretty quite and people are usually very friendly.

Really the only cons I can think of are that our city doesn't have some of the really good restaurants that bigger ones do!?

I had that on Friday! lol

I can't deal with that. I need to have the things that I like close enough for me to get them as much as I want! LOL

  • I live in a big city, and I think the pros outweigh the cons.. really the only cons are the cost of gas, homes, etc.. and the traffic. Dh and I both love living by the water though, and I love living in a more diverse city than you'd get in a small town.

  • We are moving out of Chicago towards the end of the year to a small city outside of Denver, CO. I think it provides the best of both worlds. Safety, affordable housing, good schools coupled with the pros of being near a big city (great restaurants, lots to do, shopping).
  • I just moved from a neighborhood right within the city limits to a neighborhood right outside said limits (a mile away). Regardless, I pretty much love it here, and this whole area. We rarely go to center city, although we do sometimes. Every neighborhood in the city limits and most of the suburbs have their own pubs, restaurants, arts scene, outdoor activities, what have you. There are some burbs outside the city vicinity that I'd never move to in a million years, however.. they are mostly "up north" and lame.

We also enjoy being in a city with 4 major sports teams- we have partial season tix to the Phillies.I lived in an upstate NY suburb growing up and thought it was thrilling that we had 2 McD's and a BK. Needless to say, I now know what I'd be missing and don't see myself moving away from a big city anytime soon. That being said, at our old house, we heard a lot of sirens, dogs barking, people coming out of bars and getting off the bus late at night, and you couldn't go outside without talking to your neighbors. I think we'll probably stay outside the city limits but close enough to get somewhere good in a 3-5 minute drive.

  • I'm in LA, and before this spent 7 years in Seattle.   I have always preferred the energy, convenience and diversity of living in a major city, but now that I am getting older (and looking at buying a house) the 'burbs are calling my name.

I will always live very close to a big city (otherwise there isn't enough work for DH and i, both being actors) but I think I am ready to live like 20 mins outside and have a yard, rather than being smack in the center of it all in a tiny apt (which is how i have lived for the past 10 years.)

  • I live in a big city and I like that we have lots of choices and since it's kind of an artsy big city lots of culture. I like being able to go to a museum or a unique restaurant without much planning since it's nearby. I also love the busy downtown area with the big buildings and lots of people!

We are going to move to a near bye smaller town that MIL lives in soon though because I don't want to raise kids in this big city. Both DH and I were kids in a small town (DH's home town is the one we are moving to in fact!).

I loved living in this big city when we were first living together and dating and the newly wed years... it was and still is fun and we love it. But once we get pregnant we both want a more small town were everyone knows everyone feel. We want to be able to let the kids play outside with less worry and to louve near family and caring neibors and have a backyard.

The good thing is we will still only be about 20 or 30 minuites from the big city so we can visit whenever!

  • I grew up on a farm. ?My town had 850 people. ?I never appreciated small town life until I moved to the big city (Chicago). ?I love going to my parents' house and experiencing the serenity of the country. ?Growing up, it annoyed me that everyone knew everyone else but, now, I find it charming. ?City life has it's pros (i.e. always something to do, lots of diversity, etc.) but I prefer small town life. ?I wish we could raise our family there but both DH and I have really good jobs that we won't give up. ?So, for now, visiting the boondocks from time to time will have to do. ?In the words of Little Big Town:

"I feel no shame I'm proud of where I came from

I was born and raised in the boondocks

One thing I know, no matter where I go

I keep my heart and soul in the boondocks."?

  • Totally a city girl. From NJ (30 min from Manhattan) and now in Atlanta suburbs (30 min from midtown)... just couldn't do the country thing. It's not "in" me. DH is from Brooklyn so he couldn't either.
  • I used to live in Houston and LOVED it. But when I moved to Wyoming I fell in love instantly. I live in a town that is about 60,000 people and it is the perfect size for me. Though at first I missed Houston dearly.

In a big city there is always something to do. But that can also be a problem if you do not live in the suburbs. It is noisy, and polluted. Which I can live without.

In Cheyenne I can always see the stars at night. I love how quiet it is.

But that is just me. It depends on what you like though.

  • When I was growing up, I really enjoyed living in a smaller town.  Actually, I lived in the boonies outside a smaller town, but I really liked it.  I played in the woods, by the lake, camped in backyards with friends, played outside at all times of day and night; I pretty much ran wild.  My grandmother's house was on the bluffs of Lake Michigan (again, boonies), and I loved being there, too.

Now that I'm older and need to shop, work, all that fun stuff, it's certainly more convenient living in a larger town/smaller city.  If my DH and I didn't live 5 minutes from a hospital and ambulance base, well, I would be a widow and not on the bump, so being close to emergency services is definitely a plus! Wink

The town I live in is good middle ground.  Big enough to have places i need (Target!) and yet small enough that I run into people I know at the grocery store.  However, I do miss seeing the stars at night and being able to sit on my front porch in a bathrobe drinking coffee. Can't always have it all, I guess. Stick out tongue

  • DH and I used to live downtown Chicago, and I loved it.  I loved walking to things and bars.  I love drinking with my neighbors on our front porch.  I loved that there were always things to do.

I hated that I couldn't see the stars, that there was never silence, and I hated the pollution.

We live in the far north suburbs now in a smaller town, and everytime we drive back home from Chicago, I get warm fuzzies.  I love the trees and farmland.  I love that everyone waves to you, even if they don't know you.  I love our little downtown area, it's super cute.  It can get pretty quiet out here, and most of the time I like it, but sometimes  I do miss the city,

  • We live in the suburbs.  I like it here. It's quiet but we're close to a lot of things.  We live right by a large county park and at the edge of the city so there's a lot of wildlife around.  We feel really safe here and even leave our back sliding door open at night or when we go out for dinner.

Our old apartment used to be right on a historic downtown (1 block long) and I sort of miss not having to get in the car to go to dinner or even to catch a train to San Francisco, but I don't mind the drunks outside at 2am and the traffic idling outside our window.

DH and I live in a small town of 300. We moved here about a year ago, and love it. It's actually DH's and my mom's hometown. I can't wait to raise children here and let 'em run. I feel safe knowing that they'll be watched out for by everyone. I'm also in love with the school--state champs in many sports and excellent teachers. They've helped shape some quite intelligent students!

  • I don't even know what to call where we live. It's definitely not big city, but not tiny town either. We have about 20,000 people, and so do most of the surrounding towns. We're an hour away from Orlando, so we have the city close enough if we want to experience the city atmosphere. I guess we are a distant suburb. I love living in a town this size. I hate the traffic in cities, but I don't think I could take living somewhere super tiny either. I guess I'm an in-between kind of girl.
  • Thanks, ladies. I guess I sometimes feel like I'm missing something by not living in a bigger place. But last week I went shopping in Knoxville, and I just felt like I was lost in the crowd. I stopped by my favorite restaurant and I hated the fact that no one knew me.

We are really starting to look at buying a home and we have no idea where we want to settle down. It's looking more like we're going to stay here, though, because our families are here and it's comforting knowing that my kids will have a safe place to grow up.

  • we live in a small city, about 500,000 in the actual city and with suburbs it's around 1m. it's not great and dh (who lived in DC for several years after college in virginia) complains about it pretty much every couple of days.

it's good in the sense that living is so cheap in comparison but it doesn't have much as far as restaurants or shopping.

we will definitely move to a big city, probably DC, in a few years once we can afford to live in a nice neighborhood in a decent-sized place. dh is also going to be running for office soon so washington is pretty much our best bet.

  • I live in New York City.  It is nice because there is literally nothing that I can't find here.  Any food, any activity, any time of day.  It's also nice to walk everywhere.

But, I hate that I hear noise all the time, that I have no yard or outdoor space, and that I can never, ever get a full view of the horizon.  There is always some building in the way.

DH and I just sold our apartment here and are hoping to buy a house in a suburb.  City life - be gone!

  • We're in like the suburb of NYC (born & raised) and I really think I'd rather live in a small town.  This place is probably perfect for a lot of people with the city so accessible but it's not me.

  • love the big city. i believe ours is the 4th largest? but it doesn't feel that big when you have lived here your whole life.

Houston is huge yes, but we love that we are close to everything and there is always something to do.
