Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

milestones for a 13 month old

I see all these posts of words that your DC's are saying and how they are walking. My DS is almost 13 months old. He doesn't walk although he will take a few steps with encouragement. And he doesn't really say any words either. He says "ba" for everything. He understands a lot. Like if I say, "Say milk" He will look at me and say "ba" and then look for his milk. He has said "mama" at times but it's totally not directed at him. He follows directions well ("go get the ball") but as far as language goes...ba, BABABA!, ba? is as close as we've come. He does do some baby signs though.

I'm getting worried. Should be be doing more at this age as far as walking or talking?

Re: milestones for a 13 month old

  • Boys can take longer.  Pedi wants words by 18 months.  Don't worry about it.  DS is 15 months with no words. If he will take a step with encouragement I bet he starts on his own any day now.

  • I freaking hate milestones for this reason!  Babies are all different they are not going to all do the same things at the same time in their life.

Other than babbling the only words DS says are mama and dada.  And then he rarely says it to us.  I am not worried at all.

The longer they hold off on talking the better.  From there it just turns into smart mouths! lol

  • DS just now started walking this past week.  Before that he refused (though he could, he did not want to).  One day he may surprise you and take off.  They do things on their own time frame. And boys are slower tospeak than girls I hear.
  • DD just starting walking about a month ago.  In terms of talking, she really only says mama.  For everything else, just just makes hard consonant sounds.  Like for book or cat she'll just say, "Kh!"  I'm not sure I would really count that as more than a good effort though. She does sign both milk and cracker, but for the most part, I would say based on charts she's "behind."  Then again, most babies I know are "behind."  I wouldn't worry about it.  I know it's hard.  I have a friend who has an 18 month old who is a verbal wizard.  Her DD can almost recite the entire alphabet and count to 10.  Every time we hang out she asks these ridicuouls questions implying that she thinks it's my fault DD can't say more.  She'll say, "Well, do you talk to her?"  Of course I do!  About every single thing I do all day long.  If DH and I prompted her to say "Dada" anymore than we already do I think we'd have to take a leave of absence from work.  It'll happen.  GL!

  • Well, DD isn't walking and she's almost 14 months. Pedi said not to worry about walking till at least 15 months. I have a friend whose DD walked at 16 months. So I'm not worried yet. He'll pick up talking when he's ready to, no worries.
  • My DD just started walking last week so I wouldn't worry about that. The talking she is big with but they say boys are slower than girls. I would just keep talking to him all the time. My DD just starts saying words back and I am always shocked!

  • Hi, I was just wondering how your DS has progressed since you wrote this post in June. My DD is 13 months now and sounds EXACTLY like your baby.  I'm also getting worried...should i be?
  • Try to remember that all children develop differently, so while you may read a ton of post about how someone's 13 month old says 20 words it doesn't mean your LO is behind.  DS says 4-5 words, but not that often, and a lot of them he doesn't say anymore because he is just learning to walk.  I have never felt like he has been behind though.

Take the "milestones" with a grain of salt.
