I think I'm an idiot

Why do you sterilize (spelling doesn't look right) bottles?  Are you suppposed to wash and sterilize?  Everytime with both?

Re: I think I'm an idiot

  • I think you only sterilize when you first buy, and of course if your baby is getting sick alot.  Clearly I dont know either. lol

It's gotta be more than that though if they sell those sterilizers.

    Good question to ask!

  • I'm no expert but it seems to me that soap and water would be enough?  Don't they make dishwasher safe bottles??

Can you tell I'm going for 500 today? I should probably get a few hours of work done though...

  • that is what I was thinking!  How is hot water and soap not enough?  I don't sterilize my stuff and I'm still living.

Oh and to PP who said they must be for more and that is why they sell them...I'm just wondering if these fall into the useless baby stuff category like Diaper Genies (sorry if you think they are necessary).

  • when you first get them sterilize both the bottles and nipples. then when baby has eaten out of them, continue sterilizing the nipples with each wash to prevent (or help prevent) thrush (Which is an infection in the mouth)

edit: Sterilize the nipples by putting them in boiling water for a few minutes- chemicals arent needed to sterilize- same as the bottles and such the first time. wash them up with hot soapy water (like you would when doing your dishes by hand) and then just boil everything. continue on with boiling the nipples.

I think bottle sterilizers are just one more unnecessary thing they try to make pregnant women spend money on, Just boil some water.

I think you should boil when you first get them because some warehouses can be pretty nasty and some stuff can get in those boxe. You don't need to sterilize after every feeding though. Hot water should be more then enough after the first sterlization.

  • Sterilizing bottles, and nipples is mostly unnecessary nowadays. Soap and water gets rid of most germs....

  • You wash and sterilize all the time!! I thought it was only sterilize once and found out by my baby getting thrush in his mouth from not doing it all the time. That was my first baby and had no idea. Avent has a mircowave sterilizer that is awesome!! For pacifers, toys, bottles, sippy cups. It is quick and a snap!!

Thanks for the update.  I'm sticking to soap and h2O.

  • Canning books say that a dishwasher with heated drying cycle is hot enough to sterilize canning jars and equipment. It would stand to reason that they would be hot enough to sterilize bottles as well.
