How old for going in a pool?

How old should LO be before going in a pool for the first time.  IL's have a pool and they are already talking about Ryan going in it, but I think he is too young right now....his skin is so sensitive.  Am I right for thinking this.  Is there a standard age you should wait for?

TIA!

Re: How old for going in a pool?

  • I'm not sure what age is appropriate, but I do know that doctors recommend no suntan lotion till at least 6 months.  I wouldn't be comfortable with DD out in the sun at a pool with no suntan lotion.

  • My DD is 9 weeks. We have a pool. Right now the water is too cold from all the rain but once it warms up I will be taking her in.
  • The recommended age is at least 6 months. I would imagine it's mostly because it is not recommended that they use sunblock until then and because their immune systems are so vulnerable as newborns.
  • 6 months...because of chemicals in the pool and body temp regulation.

  • DD is 2 months and she goes in (and I use sunblock on her). Is his skin abnormally sensitive, or are you saying it's just 3-week old sensitive?

Are you going to a 1-month checkup? If so I'd say ask your doc, but I'd say it's fine for not extended periods of time as long as you give him a bath shortly afterwards. I asked my doc at the 2 month appointment and he said it's completely fine (same with the sunblock - just test it on a small section first in case of allergies).
