If you're planning on buying or registering for an infant carseat, and specifically a Graco, have you decided between the Snugride and the newer Snugride 32?
Thanks for asking this. I'm trying to decide between the two as well. I think I'm going to go with the snugride 32 because it holds ten more pounds then the snugride.
Snugride 32. We're both tall and I'm afraid we may have a giant baby that will grow out of a standard carrier too fast. Contrary to what people say, it isn't much heavier than the other carriers (sans the base).
The regular snugride will probably only last you 4 or 5 months. The snugride 32 will last you a year most likely. Most babies outgrow their seats by height and not weight. As far as the 32 lb seat goes, you will probably stop taking the seat out of the car at four months, but you'll still get use out of it.
I plan on buying a seat that lasts up to 30-32 lbs. I figure it's a better value.
We have the Graco Snugride. DS is just under 15 pounds (at 4mo) and is already getting too heavy for me to carry him in the carrier (its 9pounds so 24 pounds with DS in it). If we had the 32 I can't imagine carrying DS around in it at that weight - just over 40lbs combined. I think alot of babies are too tall/long to be comfortable in the seat by the time (or before) they hit the weight limit. I anticipate needing to go to a convertible seat due to height rather than weight.
Married June '03. DS born Jan '09. DD born Feb '12. No, we didn't choose to be childless for the first 6 years, only the first 3.

the snugride 32 w/o the base is 10 lbs. How would it be 40 lbs combined?
I think the extra for the Snugride 32 is a waste. Even if it accomodates your 1 year old (who will likely outgrow the seats 32" height requirement LONG before s/he outgrows it by weight), you will still need to buy a convertible seat. Its not really saving you any money, you need the convertible either way. And you aren't going to be carrying around a 30 pound kid in an infant seat anyway, so the convenience factor isn't there either.

32 pounds of kid plus 10 pounds of carseat equals 42 pounds total to carry.

Yeah, your kid will not stay in the infant carrier that long. My kiddo will be a year next month and weighs in at a mere eighteen pounds. She's in a convertible seat. Not to mention that she would have outgrown the height requirements by now, I believe.
my (almost) 9 month old is 20 lbs and hated being in his infant carrier. when he got to be about 15 lbs, i could barely carry the carrier with him in it anymore. it was way too heavy. he outgrew it by length before weight (22 lbs for snugride), but he LOVES his convertible. we switched him to it at 5.5 months.

LOL! sorry I totally misread the post.
This is why I've been reluctant about buying a carrier. I just wanted to get the britax that goes from 5 to 65 lbs but everyone is telling me life will be easier w/ a newborn in a carrier. So, if I'm going to invest the $ in a carrier, I might as well get something that won't be obsolete in 4 or 5 months. I don't plan on taking it out once LO gets too big. But at least the money spent on a carrier won't be a total loss.
There's no way you will be lugging your kid around in the graco 32. Hells no. You might still use it and just leave it in the car- so you at least get your money's worth out of it- but most likely you will have switched to a convertible car seat long before that.
My DD has always been in the 50th percentile or below for weight and 60th percentile or below for height and I switched her to a convertible car seat at eight months. I was sick of lugging the darn infant seat every where- way too heavy. (She was only 18 pounds at her nine month appt).
She seemed much happier once I made the switch too. However, the only drawback to the convertible seat (for me) is she can no longer nap while I am shopping. She used to nap in the infant carrier while I was out running errands. Obviously, now she has to sit up in the shopping cart.

Keep in mind that once most kids are sitting up on their own, they won't be that comfortable in an infant seat anymore. DD HATED hers at about 6 months, but loved the convertible. Its really likely that you won't get as much use out of it as the manufacturers say.
That being said, I think you'd be sorry if you skipped the infant seat altogether, especially if you live in an area with a cold winter. Its priceless to take the whole carrier out and cover it with a blanket when the baby is small.

This, 100%. Mine was so much happier in his convertible. Once he could sit up, he didn't want to lie reclined, ever. He was so much happier when he could sit there and look out the window.
I really go think the 32 is a sales gimmick. You will absolutely still need a convertible, but they sell you on the "rear facing until 1 is best" crap. What they don't tell you is that rear facing until at LEAST 2 is most reccomended. I can not think of any 1.5 year old who will be content to sit in an infant seat.
I still think that if you want the most bang for your buck you should get the higher weight seat. Yes, you will stop carrying it around at 4-5 months, but then you leave it in your car until the child outgrows it. Then at that point get the convertible. Car seats expire, so if you wait to get the convertible and use the infant seat for roughly a year then you get an extra 6+ months of use out of the convertible. Of course this assumes that you will be buying a convertible that can accommodate a larger child, or that you will be using the convertible for subsequent siblings.
Coming from someone that has btdt don't waste the money on the 32. K was out of her infant seat at 6 months. We were much happier when we moved to the convertible seat.
I have to agree with all of those who have used infants seats already. My DS who is 25 months weighs 26 lbs. He has always been around the 80th %tile for length and around the 15th %tile for weight. We stopped using our Snugride around 8 months, but he was much more comfortable in the convertable. Ours reclines a good bit so he still sleeps comfortably in it.
There is no way I would want to carry a 1 yo in the carrier. It was so convienient when DS was a baby, but once he was ready for the convertable, he was ready. GL!
We had a Snugride and I always regretted not getting a smaller carseat. I couldn't use it in my car rear facing without pushing the passenger seat up as far as it would go. That effectively made the passenger seat useless. I ended up driving my husband's car until we switched to a convertible car seat at a year.
The carseat was too big to fit in most carts or slings at restaurants.
If I had to buy again, I would go with the standard seat.
Thank you all SO much for your input!! Does anyone have any thoughts or information on whether the snugride is any safer than the snugride 32?? Thanks again--I really appreciate it.
Our travel system came with the Snugride 32. Ideally I'd like to get as much use out of the carrier/car seat as possible before we have to move onto another car careat. This is of course depending on our baby. If she gets to be too unhappy with sitting in a reclined position we'll move to the next seat, I have no problem with that. Again, this seat came with the stroller; we didn't necessarily pick the stroller because of the seat, it was more for the safety and crash test reviews.

An infant carrier is a great thing when they are little. Really. Best ever.
But chances are you will still need to replace the 32 with a rear facing convertible.
Trust me. Get the Snug Ride and invest in a nice convertible. It will last you longer than the 32.
