Help!..my 4 day old has a bleeding diaper rash:-(

So DD's diaper rash seems to have really taken a turn for the worst overnight.  When I changed her diaper this morning, there were a few tiny bleeding cuts on her butt as well as the bright red flaming skin.  Ever since we got home from the hospital we've tried using zincofax, pentene cream ans sudocream to try and settle the rash down but it doesn't seem to be working.

Does anyone have suggestions on another product or treatment that might help us out quickly?  DD's Pedi'soffic eios closed until Monday so I won't be able to get any good medical advice until then.

TIA

  • My friend is a nurse and she recommends Aquaphor (I think I spelled it wrong).
  • Loading the player...
  • either change the wipes or just use a wet cloth.  it's amazing how sensitive their skin is to all that stuff.

  • This happened with DS in his first 2 weeks.

I was using Huggies wipes and changed to Pampers Sensitive.  I was also using Beaudroz Butt Paste and switched to Aquaphor.  Cleared up in about 2 days.

I also made very very very sure I cleaned him really well.

Hope this helps.  I know it's tough to see their tender little skin all irritated!!

  • I would take her diaper off and lay her down on a towel for 20 minutes everyday to let things dry out. Poor baby, that sounds painful. Maybe she is allergic to something in the disposables?I don't know any creams you can try, but i hope it gets better!
  • I used A&D ointment and alot of baby powder. I also did not use baby wipes...I used a baby washcloth and water. You might try to change the wipes. DS can't use Huggies wipes or he breaks out in a horrible rash. I put alot of the ointment on and alot of baby powder (make sure the powder has cornstarch). I also changed his diaper frequently that way he didn't stay in a wet diaper for to long. You should be able to page your doctor, most pedi's have an exchange so that you can get in touch with them regardless of what day of the week it is. Good Luck.
  • If it is warm enough to let her go naked then that is what I would do, that and the sun. It is the best way to get rid of daiper rash according to my NICU nurse friend.

Yes, you might want to just use a wet cloth for now.  After she's clean, I'd make sure she is really dry and apply vaseline.  We were having a lot of problems early on with diaper rash and our pedi recommended vaseline.  It has been great.  Hope it gets better soon.

  • oh, poor baby! I use calmoseptine...its not in the baby section but one of its uses is diaper cream. Our pedi reccommended it to us. Its usually behind the pharmacy counter or right near it. The stuff is awesome. It lays on nice, not watery like some-make sure you put a lot on.

It may help to use a wet towel to wipe the baby's bottom clean for now and if you can let your baby air out(maybe lay the baby on a blanket for awhile with out a diaper on). Good luck!

This and stop with the wipes, use a wet rag, change brand of diapers, and get plenty of fresh air to it.

  • I'm in Edmonton too. ?Phone Capital Health Link. ?You might wait on hold for a while, but the nurses are so thorough and will tell you what to do. ?I had to get a prescription for my DD's rash and it cleared up in 2 days.
  • I feel your pain!  Poor DD was the same way at around 4 days because she was pooping so much!  Make sure you are using sensitive wipes and load her up with Desitin creamy.
  • My LO had a very bad rash early on too....one thing that our doctor recommended was soaking in a warm salt bath a few times a day.  If you can manage this without getting her belly button wet, you may want to try it.  It really did seem to clear it up...as well as the short lived recurrance a few weeks later.
  • Give her a lot more diaper free time, use wash cloths instead of chemical wipes and see about a different brand of diapers or even cloth diapers. I hope it clears up soon.
