Is your baby on Zantac? Come in please.

How do you give DC Zantac -- a dropper doesn't work well for us.  She is only on .75 ml.  Would it work thru a nipple well?  Do you mix with formula/BM?  Does yours have a minty taste?

Re: Is your baby on Zantac? Come in please.

  • We gave it to him with a syringe.  It was easier to get into his mouth and "shoot" it towards the back of his mouth.  It was not minty...it is actually pretty gross tasting.  I never mixed it with his formula/BM because we were told to give it to him 30 minutes before he ate.

FYI...Zantac is weight sensitive, so the dosage will need to be upped as DC gains weight.

  • Yes it had a minty taste and the first and only time I gave it to ds w/opper, he spit it out, there was no way he was taking it like that.  I gave it to him in his bottle.  It worked well when he was on it.
  • Jacob takes his through a dropper and doesn't normally spit it out.  But, I was told by a pediatric pharmacist that I could mix it with formula/BM, but just to be sure that he'll take the whole thing.  She actually suggested mixing it with about an ounce of it so I know he'll take it and then give the rest of the feed.  Ours does taste minty.  :)

  • Yes, ours is minty and Ava HATES it.  She kept spitting it out.  Now we make a special 1 oz bottle to give her before her regular bottle (twice a day) and mix the zantac in with it.  Otherwise she wasn't getting the full dose if she didn't finish the bottle.

  • Jasper always let me squirt it in his mouth with the syringe.. I kind of taught him to open his mouth when I'd say "ahhhhh". It came in handy when he started solids.. he was the only kid at daycare opening his mouth well for feedings at his age :)
  • It loses effectiveness when take with formula so use that sparingly if that's the only way that will work. (should be taken 1/2 hour before or 1 hr after feeding) If you use a syringe and put it in their cheek toward the back you'll bypass most of their tastebuds and they'll automatically be compelled to swallow.

  • We use a small syringe, a really small one, and aim for the back of her mouth.

I am shocked that neither our pedi nor the pediatric gastroenterologist ever mentioned this -- both told us to give it her mixed with formula at mealtime! ?I guess since we're weaning her off of it now it doesn't matter too much, but she's been taking it with formula since she was six weeks old!

    Jill,

although MrsReem is totally right, my pedi's opinion was this: if the only way we can get him to get the whole dose is to mix, better that then not getting any meds at all... We tried everything (ours was with prevacid, he took the zantac well!) and he would let it drip out or spit. Finally we started giving him an ounce with the meds, and then after 20 min or so, let him drink a reg bottle. It worked
